Publication number: 20100246471Abstract: A dynamic shared forward link channel (or “data” channel) is used to send multicast data to a group of wireless devices, e.g., using a common long code mask for the data channel. Reference power control (PC) bits are also sent on the data channel and used for signal quality estimation. A shared forward link control channel is used to send user-specific signaling to individual wireless devices, e.g., using time division multiplexing (TDM) and a unique long code mask for each wireless device. A shared forward link indicator channel is used to send reverse link (RL) PC bits to the wireless devices, e.g., using TDM. The data channel is jointly power controlled by all wireless devices receiving the data channel. The control and indicator channels are individually power controlled by each wireless device such that the signaling and RL PC bits sent on these channels for the wireless device are reliably received.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 4, 2010Publication date: September 30, 2010Applicant: QUALCOMM IncorporatedInventors: Tao Chen, Baaziz Achour, Brian K. Patent number: 7787389Abstract: A Method and System for Utilization of an Outer Decoder in a Broadcast Services Communication System is described. An outer decoder and an inner decoder encode a block of information to be transmitted, to improve protection by adding redundancy. The redundancy permits decoding of the information from less than a complete encoded block of information. Consequently, the receiving station determines when sufficient amount of information for successful decoding has been received, and utilizes the time remaining before the next block of information arrives to perform other activities, e.g., hard handoff on a broadcast channel, inter-frequency hard handoff, and other activities. Alternatively, the receiving station can cease reception, thus decrease power consumption. Furthermore, part of the information block may be utilized for transmission of signaling information.Type: GrantFiled: August 20, 2001Date of Patent: August 31, 2010Assignee: Qualcomm IncorporatedInventors: Tao Chen, Jack K. Patent number: 7702001Abstract: In an antenna diversity environment, the timing offset of the receiver's fingers are based on the timing offset of the received peaks of the base station transmit signals. In a system with non-negligible multipath spacing, the timing offset of the received peaks of the base station transmit signals are not necessarily at the same location. In one embodiment, the demodulating elements for the signal from each base station antenna use the same offset for demodulating and determining an error signal based on pilot signal sampling prior to the timing offset and subsequent to the timing offset. The error signals are averaged and used by a time tracking loop to track the incoming signal. In another embodiment, the demodulating elements for the signal from each base station antenna independently time track the signals with different timing offsets for each finger. The preferred embodiment depends on the method used by the base station to multiplex the data onto multiple transmit antennas.Type: GrantFiled: February 26, 2004Date of Patent: April 20, 2010Assignee: QUALCOMM IncorporatedInventors: Roland Reinhard Rick, Parvathanathan Subrahmanya, Brian K. Patent number: 7254394Abstract: A method and system for a handoff in a broadcast communication system is disclosed. A subscriber assisted handoff is impractical in a broadcast communication system due to e.g., a high signaling load, a difficulty to synchronize the broadcast transmission. On the other hand, the small number of broadcast channels enables the subscriber station to perform the handoff autonomously. To streamline the autonomous handoff decision process, several distinct sets of pilot identifiers and rules for transitioning among the sets are defined. To fully integrate broadcast services with the services provided by the cellular telephone systems in a subscriber environment, a methods for various handoff scenarios are analyzed.Type: GrantFiled: March 15, 2004Date of Patent: August 7, 2007Assignee: QUALCOMM, IncorporatedInventors: Tao Chen, Jun Wang, Ragulan Sinnarajah, Brian K. Patent number: 7190749Abstract: Techniques for canceling pilot interference in a wireless (e.g., CDMA) communication system. In one method, a received signal comprised of a number of signal instances, each including a pilot, is initially processed to provide data samples. Each signal instance's pilot interference may be estimated by despreading the data samples with a spreading sequence for the signal instance, channelizing the despread data to provide pilot symbols, filtering the pilot symbols to estimate the channel response of the signal instance, and multiplying the estimated channel response with the spreading sequence to provide the estimated pilot interference. The pilot interference estimates due to all interfering multipaths are combined to derive the total pilot interference, which is subtracted from the data samples to provide pilot-canceled data samples. These samples are then processed to derive demodulated data for each of at least one (desired) signal instance in the received signal.Type: GrantFiled: October 10, 2001Date of Patent: March 13, 2007Assignee: Qualcomm IncorporatedInventors: Jeffrey A. Patent number: 6986092Abstract: Techniques for efficiently performing erasure-and-single-error correction block decoding on a received block of symbols previously coded column-wise with an (N, K) linear block code and row-wise with an error detection code (e.g., a CRC code). Initially, each row of the received block is marked as either an erased row or an un-erased row. To perform erasure-and-single-error correction block decoding on the received block, a codeword corresponding to a column of the received block containing an undetected symbol error is initially identified. The location of the symbol error in the codeword is then determined based on a particular block decoding scheme and corresponding to the selected (N, K) block code. The row of the received block containing the symbol error is then marked as an erased row. Block decoding may then be performed for the received block with the newly marked erased row containing the symbol error.Type: GrantFiled: December 4, 2001Date of Patent: January 10, 2006Assignee: Qualcomm Inc.Inventors: Brian K.
