Patent number: 9251325Abstract: Methods, systems, and computer programs for verifying a password are disclosed. For example, the password can be verified on a mobile device to control user access to the mobile device. In some implementations, a mobile device includes a user interface, a main processor, and a co-processor. The user interface receives a submitted password value from a user. The main processor calls the co-processor to provide a hash chain input value based on the submitted password value. The main processor evaluates a hash chain based on the hash chain input value provided by the co-processor. Evaluating the hash chain generates a submitted password verification value. The submitted password verification value is compared to a stored password verification value stored on the mobile device. Access to mobile device functionality may be permitted or denied based on a result of the comparison.Type: GrantFiled: November 19, 2013Date of Patent: February 2, 2016Assignees: BlackBerry Limited, Certicom Corp.Inventors: Robert J. Patent number: 8784396Abstract: This invention relates to a tampon (10). The tampon includes an elongate absorbent body (12) and at least one surface formation (34, 36, 38, 40) applied over an exterior surface of the absorbent body. The at least one surface formation is of a material different to the absorbent body and is configured to inhibit expansion of at least a portion of the absorbent body i-n use due to absorption of menses by the absorbent body, and/or to facilitate insertion and seating of the tampon in a vagina. The invention extends to a tampon which includes an elongate absorbent body which is non-circular in outline in end view. The invention further extends to a tampon which has a particular correct angular orientation relative to its longitudinal axis, with which it is to be inserted into a vagina, the correct angular orientation being clearly visible to a user.Type: GrantFiled: July 19, 2002Date of Patent: July 22, 2014Inventor: Peter James Brian Lamb

Patent number: 8457419Abstract: A method of decoding data that is encoded with a set of prefix codes begins by receiving the data at a computing device, and then compiling native machine code from the prefix code set for execution by a processing unit of the computing device. The machine code implements a binary tree of prefix codes that corresponds to the prefix code set. The data is decoded by traversing the prefix code tree, which is effected by executing the machine code with the processing unit.Type: GrantFiled: April 13, 2007Date of Patent: June 4, 2013Assignee: Research In Motion LimitedInventors: Brian Lamb, Michael Carmody, Guixing Wu

Patent number: 8437560Abstract: A method and system for reducing the number of mathematical operations required in the JPEG decoding process without substantially impacting the quality of the image displayed is disclosed. Embodiments provide an efficient JPEG decoding process for the purposes of displaying an image on a display smaller than the source image, for example, the screen of a handheld device. According to one aspect of the invention, this is accomplished by reducing the amount of processing required for dequantization and inverse DCT (IDCT) by effectively reducing the size of the image in the quantized, DCT domain prior to dequantization and IDCT. This can be done, for example, by discarding unnecessary DCT index rows and columns prior to dequantization and IDCT. In one embodiment, columns from the right, and rows from the bottom are discarded such that only the top left portion of the block of quantized, and DCT coefficients are processed.Type: GrantFiled: October 21, 2011Date of Patent: May 7, 2013Assignee: Research In Motion LimitedInventors: Guixing Wu, Brian Lamb, En-Hui Yang

Patent number: 8261459Abstract: An extendable edge reference tool is disclosed. A first segment having a extending end and a receptacle end is provided. The receptacle end includes a coupling mechanism for joining a second segment using an over-center locking force to secure said second segment to said first segment. This tool provides for a useful continuous reference edge over extended distances through adjoining segments. Each segment is suitably compact to be easy stowed. The segments are useful individually. The segments can be joined to extend tool to lengths useful in common construction tasks.Type: GrantFiled: October 4, 2010Date of Patent: September 11, 2012Assignee: D2M International PTY Ltd.Inventors: Edward Cooper, Jeff Hayashida, Andrew Butler, David Titzler, Brian Lamb, John Johnston, Christopher Tacklind
