  • Patent number: 6419483
Abstract: A method and apparatus for curing photocurable dental materials involve a solid state light emitter and a source of electrical current connected to the light emitter. The source of electrical current provides a current to the light emitter that is sufficient to reduce the lifetime of the light emitter to less than 10 hours. The intensity of light from the light emitter is substantially increased and the apparatus can be conveniently disposed of after use on a single patient. A light guide that includes two conical optical surfaces collects light from the solid state light emitter and optionally directs the light to a third optical surface which has the shape of an elongated, curved tube.

  • Patent number: 6379147
Abstract: A dental impression tray assembly includes an impression tray as well as a liner. The liner is adapted to cover holes in the impression tray in order to prevent leakage of impression material through the holes during a dental procedure. Preferably, the liner is removably connected to the tray so that the practitioner has the option of using the tray with or without the liner.

  • Patent number: 6364659
Abstract: A bite opener for use during orthodontic treatment has a base for mounting on a lingual side of a tooth, as well as at least one occlusal portion for contact with an opposing tooth so that other teeth (such as molar teeth) can be extruded. In one embodiment, the bite opener has a channel extending between a mesial section and a distal section, so that the sections can be squeezed together when desired to debond the bite opener from the patient's tooth. In other embodiments, the bite opener includes a bite plate connected to the body, and the bite plate is made of a material softer than the body to enhance patient comfort when the jaws are closed. Optionally, the bite plate is detachably connected to the body so that the bite plate can be removed before debonding the body from the tooth.

  • Patent number: 6120289
Abstract: An attachment device useful during the course of orthodontic treatment couples an interarch appliance to brackets and/or to archwires placed in the oral cavity. The attachment device includes a wire segment that crosses over a labial side of an archwire in order to enable a coupler of the interarch appliance to slide past the archwire as the patient's jaws are opened. The attachment device increases the range of free sliding motion of the interarch appliance and reduces the amount of stress that might be otherwise imposed on the appliance, on the brackets and/or the archwires as the patient's jaws are opened. The attachment device is particularly suitable for use with Class II correction appliances including elongated, resilient force modules that have an inherent bias toward a normally straight orientation.
