Publication number: 20140308166Abstract: A blood sampling transfer device that is adapted to receive a blood sample having a cellular portion and a plasma portion is disclosed. The blood sampling transfer device is able to separate the plasma portion from the cellular portion. After separation, the blood sampling transfer device is able to transfer the plasma portion of the blood sample to a point-of-care testing device. The blood sampling transfer device also provides a closed sampling and transfer system that reduces the exposure of a blood sample and provides fast mixing of a blood sample with a sample stabilizer. The blood sampling transfer device is engageable with a blood testing device for closed transfer of a portion of the plasma portion from the blood sampling transfer device to the blood testing device. The blood testing device is adapted to receive the plasma portion to analyze the blood sample and obtain test results.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 14, 2014Publication date: October 16, 2014Inventors: Gary D. Publication number: 20130281972Abstract: A shielding needle assembly is provided with a hub having a needle cannula with a puncture tip extending from a forward end thereof, and a shield member in telescoping association with the hub. A drive member biases the hub and the shield member away from each other for relative telescopic movement between a first position in which the puncture tip extends from a forward end of the shield member, and a second position in which the puncture tip is encompassed within the shield member. A pivoting lever maintains the hub and the shield member in the first position against the bias of the drive member with the needle cannula exposed for use. The lever is pivotable during contact with a patient's skin surface such as during venipuncture, thereby releasing the hub and the shield member from the first position and permitting the drive member to bias the hub and the shield member toward the second position.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 29, 2010Publication date: October 24, 2013Applicant: BECTON, DICKINSON AND COMPANYInventor: C. Patent number: 8414560Abstract: A luer connector assembly is provided for enhancing the frictional engagement between medical devices such as syringes and needle assemblies. The assembly needle includes a female luer fitting having a passageway and a relatively soft, resilient member bounding the passageway. The passageway is also bounded by the body of the fitting, which is harder than the soft, resilient member. A male luer fitting inserted into the passageway engages both the soft, resilient member and the body of the female luer fitting. A method of manufacturing such a connector assembly is further provided. A first material is injected into a mold to form the body of a female luer fitting, the fitting including a passageway and a recess extending into the body. A second material is then injected such that it extends into the recess and bounds the passageway. The second material, when cool, is softer than the first material.Type: GrantFiled: October 19, 2007Date of Patent: April 9, 2013Assignee: Becton, Dickinson and CompanyInventors: Charles F. Patent number: RE43473Abstract: A needle assembly includes a needle and a hub mounted to each other. The hub includes a sidewall spaced outwardly from the needle cannula and extending to a distal position between the opposed ends of the needle cannula. A housing integral with the hub defines a sidewall to partially confine a safety shield. The safety shield is slidably disposed about the needle cannula and releasably retained in a proximal position and can be moved to a distal position where the safety shield completely surrounds that portion of the needle hub projecting distally from the hub. The needle assembly includes a spring for propelling the safety shield to the distal position and a latch for releasing the safety shield from the proximal position. The latch may be passively activated by normal usage of the medical implement to which the needle assembly is mounted or alternately activated manually.Type: GrantFiled: January 9, 2008Date of Patent: June 12, 2012Assignee: Becton, Dickinson and CompanyInventors: C.
