Patent number: 6276262Abstract: An automatic tea brewing system and method comprising a tea brewer with a water discharge hole at the its lower end, a mesh filter above the tea water discharge hole, and a teapot positioned to receive brewed tea discharged from the water discharge hole. The tea brewer and the water discharge hole are configured and sized to allow holding a certain amount of water flowing naturally through the water discharge hole in a predetermined amount of time, thereby automatically controlling the manner and rate of tea brewing. The mesh filter is of basket or disk shape, and is removable or non-removable. An optional lid or saucer may be added to the system as separate units, shaped and sized to fit with the tea brewer and teapot.Type: GrantFiled: April 26, 2000Date of Patent: August 21, 2001Inventor: Jason C. Patent number: 5264346Abstract: A novel colorimetric method for beta-lactamase assay and its applications are disclosed. The novel assay method for beta-lactamase is based on the discovery described in this invention. The chromophore formed by oxidation of either the N-alkyl derivative of p-phenylenediamine or the 3,3',5,5'-tetraalkyl derivative of benzidine can be decolorized by the open beta-lactam ring end product resulting from the hydrolysis of a penicillin in the presence of a mercury-containing compound. The same chromophore can be decolorized by the open beta-lactam ring end product resulting from the hydrolysis of a cephalosporin in either the presence or the absence of the mercury-containing compound. None of the intact beta-lactam antibiotics can decolorize the chromophore in either the presence or the absence of the mercury-containing compound. The final concentration of the mercury-containing compound in the decolorization mixture ranges from approximately 0.Type: GrantFiled: June 3, 1991Date of Patent: November 23, 1993Inventor: Kirk C. Patent number: 5100136Abstract: A racket comprises a head frame having a catgut string threaded therethrough to form a striking surface therein, and a handle extending from the throat portion of the head frame. The head frame has at least one elongate, penetrating aperture formed thereon, with each aperture being separated from the outer periphery thereof by a pair of aligned ribs disposed to either side of the plane of the striking surface to define a receiving space therein. An elongate, elastic element having a generally T-shaped cross-section can be mounted in each receiving space with a central longitudinal protrusion thereon resting between the ribs. The elastic elements serve to adjust the weight and balance of the racket and absorb concomitant shock generated by the impact of a ball with the striking surface.Type: GrantFiled: November 23, 1990Date of Patent: March 31, 1992Inventor: Dennis C. S. Chen

Patent number: 4965193Abstract: An improved developer for a method for the specific detection of the presence of beta-lactamase from microbial sources is disclosed. The method utilizes a beta-lactam ring-containing substrate whose amide bond is hydrolyzed in the presence of beta-lactamase. A substrate which includes a beta-lactam antibiotic with an acyl side chain containing an alpha-amino group and an alpha-phenyl group or its derivatives is first contacted with an organism thought to produce beta-lactamase or a cell-free beta-lactamase preparation, and, subsequently, it is determined whether the reaction product between the unhydrolyzed substrate, the end products and the organism or the preparation fluoresces. Fluorescence is the indication of .beta.-lactamase activity. The developer comprises the addition of an oxidizing agent (preferably also containing formaldehyde) to the reaction product to enhance the fluorescence. The oxidizing agent is selected from the group consisting of Ag.sup.+, Hg.sup.++, H.sub.2 O.sub.2, I.sub.3.sup.-, IO.Type: GrantFiled: October 29, 1987Date of Patent: October 23, 1990Assignee: Washington Research FoundationInventor: Kirk C. Patent number: 4740459Abstract: A rapid method for the specific detection of the presence of Beta-lactamase from microbial sources is disclosed. The method utilizes a Beta-lactam ring containing substrate whose amide bond is hydrolyzed in the presence of Beta-Lactamase. A substrate, which includes a Beta-Lactam antibiotic with an acyl side chain containing an .alpha.-amino group and a .alpha.-phenyl group and/or its derivatives is first contacted with an organism thought to produce Beta-lactamase or a cell-free Beta-lactamase preparation, and, subsequently, it is determined whether the reaction product between the substrate and the organism or the preparation fluoresces.Type: GrantFiled: August 6, 1984Date of Patent: April 26, 1988Assignee: Washington Research FoundationInventors: Kirk C. Patent number: 4461293Abstract: In various embodiments of a respirating gas supply method and apparatus a control circuit (32) responsive to a sensor (28) operates valve means (26) to supply pulses of respirating gas through a single hose cannula (48) to an in vivo respiratory system when negative pressure indicative of inspiration is sensed by the sensor (28). The control circuit (32) operates the valve (26) to communicate the in vivo respiratory system with a supply of gas (20) only if the negative pressure sensed by the sensor (28) does not occur within a predetermined yet selectively variable required minimum delay interval between successive pulsed applications of gas to the in vivo respiratory system. The pulse of gas applied to the in vivo respiratory system can be spiked pulses or square pulses. Humidifiers, nebulizers and sources of a second gas are provided in accordance with various embodiments. Apnea event detection is also provided.Type: GrantFiled: December 3, 1982Date of Patent: July 24, 1984Assignee: Kircaldie, Randall, and McNabInventor: Kevin C. S. Chen
