  • Publication number: 20160165002
Abstract: In one embodiment, a method includes receiving, from a beacon associated with a third-party content provider (e.g., a business), session information of the first user of an online social network. The first user's mobile device may be proximate to and in a wireless communication session with the beacon, which may be located at the third-party content provider. One or more second users, who are each connected to the first user in a social graph, may be selected. A communication session is not active between the beacon and the mobile devices of the second users. The selection may be based on selected second users being located within a predefined distance of the beacon (e.g., in the same neighborhood). A notification referencing selected second users (e.g., a prompt to invite the selected second users to the beacon location) may be sent to the first user's mobile device.

  • Publication number: 20160162938
Abstract: In one embodiment, a method includes receiving, from a beacon associated with a third-party content provider (e.g., a business), session information of a user of an online social network. The user's mobile device may have been in at least one wireless communication session with the beacon, and during the session the mobile device was proximate to the beacon. Sponsored content may be received from a third-party system of the third-party content provider. The session information may include an identifier for each of the users, which may be used to access social-networking information for each user. An advertisement may be customized based on the session information, the sponsored content, and the social-networking information, and sent to the user's mobile device for display. User-specified permissions may delimit which information may be used to customize the advertisement and how it may be sent to the mobile device.

  • Patent number: 9137723
Abstract: In one embodiment, a portable, networked, computing device comprises a processor, a plurality of radios, and a memory. The device may be operable to pair, by at least one of the radios, with a device associated with a user. The device may then monitor, by one of the radios, a signal for a connection established with a first network. When the device determines that the signal for the first network has dropped below a threshold level of quality, it may enable access point mode for at least one of the paired devices by turning on a radio to establish a connection with a second network and thereby providing connectivity to the second network for the at least one of the paired devices. If multiple networks are available, the device may select an optimal network based on an assessment of one or more factors.

  • Publication number: 20150131220
Abstract: A portable computing device includes at least a base portion of a lightweight material that includes at least a wedge shaped top case having a trough formed at an interfacing edge thereof. The trough includes a raised portion having a first contact surface and a receiving area, and a bottom case coupled to the top case to form a complete housing for at least a portion of the portable computing device for enclosing at least a plurality of operational components and a plurality of structural components. The portable computing device also includes at least a lid portion pivotally connected to the base portion by a hinge assembly. In the described embodiments, the lid portion has a display in communication with one or more of the plurality of components in the base portion by way of or more electrical conductors that electrically connect the base portion to the lid portion.
