    Abstract: A method and circuit is provided for more efficiently coupling light between two optical waveguides such as optical fibres. When the two waveguides are coupled to spaced apart collimating lenses such as GRIN lenses, the beam propagating between the spaced part lenses may be shifted. In this instance light can more efficiently be coupled out of the output optical fibre if it is angled with respect to the optical axis of the GRIN lens to which it is coupled. This invention provides an output fibre that is non-parallel with the optical axis of the lens it is coupled thereto.

    Abstract: This invention relates to an optical demultiplexor having a narrow band filter for separating a narrow band channel prior to utilizing one or more wide band filters for separating a plurality of channels into groups of channels. The groups of channels can then be further separated or demultiplexed by a plurality of narrow band filters. Advantageously, a plurality of closely spaced (i.e. 50 Ghz) channels can be separated using conventional dichroic filters.

    Abstract: An optical demultiplexor utilizes a single optical interference filter disposed between an input end and an output end of the device. The filter is preferably housed within a cavity in a glass block having an upstanding input end, endwall. The optical filter is a wavelength selective means having a wavelength characteristic dependent upon an angle of incidence. The device has a plurality of reflective surfaces disposed at the input end for reflecting light reflected from the filter, back to the filter at different predetermined angles. Each different predetermined incident angle allows a different predetermined wavelength of light to pass through the filter to an output end being spatially separated from other predetermined wavelengths that pass through the filter. The reflective surfaces are preferably formed in the upstanding endwall of the glass block. Sixteen channels can be separated by this demultiplexor.

    Abstract: An optical filter is provided having first and second graded index (GRIN) lenses preferably disposed in a coaxial relationship so that they have a common optical axis. Each of the GRIN lenses have an endface providing a port at predetermined location. The ports are disposed on opposite sides of the optical axis and each of the ports are substantially equidistant from the optical axis, so as to be oppositely offset from the optical axis by a same amount. The filter also includes an optical interference filter disposed between other endfaces of the first and second graded index lenses. By changing the location of the ports by a same small amount, the center wavelength of the filter changes by a small amount, thus in manufacture, the filter is tunable. After tuning the filter to a desired wavelength, the locations of the ports are fixed.

    Abstract: A device for splitting an optical beam into two beams propagating along different optical paths, is provided. The device includes a pair of graded index collimating lenses having their planar collimating ends aligned such that they are both inwardly facing and share a common optical axis. A partially transmitting partially reflective material is disposed between the lenses. At least one of the planar endfaces of the collimating ends are wedge shaped such that a non-zero angle is formed between the two endfaces. This non-zero angle reduces the effect of unwanted optical interference.
