    Abstract: The invention relates to a lubricating oil composition having improved antioxidant properties, and which contains a molybdenum compound and an alkylated phenothiazine. Further, it may also include a secondary diarylamine, preferably an alkylated diphenylamine. This combination of additives provides improved oxidation control and friction modifier performance to the lubricating oil. The composition is particularly suited for use as a crankcase lubricant, or a transmission lubricant, including low levels and zero levels of phosphorus.

    Abstract: A method of preparing a lubricant detergent additive at a significantly enhanced filtration rate comprising the steps of:(a) mixing a neutral calcium sulfonate with sulfur, diluent oil, (C.sub.5 -C.sub.40) alkylphenol, ethylene glycol, and calcium hydroxide to form a mixture;(b) agitating said mixture at a temperature of about 150.degree. C. to about 200.degree. C. for a period of about four hours;(c) bubbling CO.sub.2 into said agitated mixture to provide an intermediate product; and(d) filtering said intermediate product at a rate of about 50 ml per 3 to 6 minutes to provide the lubricant detergent additive.

    Abstract: An improved process for the preparation of sulfurized overbased alkaline earth metal phenates comprises steps of:(a) sulfurizing an alkylphenol with a sulfur halide in an alkane solvent;(b) neutralizing the sulfurized alkylphenol with an alkaline earth metal compound in a mixed solvent comprising an alkane and a lower alkanol to produce a sulfurized alkaline earth metal phenate;(c) carbonating said phenate with carbon dioxide to produce an overbased phenate; and(d) filtering and solvent stripping the reaction mixture to recover the phenate product.The products have a high degree of sulfurization with a substantial portion of monosulfide bonds and are substantially free from alkylene oxide residues.
