Patent number: 5718538Abstract: A vertical reel pipelaying vessel having a vertical pipe storage reel rotatably positioned aft of midship and a vertical aligner wheel positioned forward of the reel. A guide means includes supports for the aligner wheel on the vessel to permit rotational movement about the axle of the aligner wheel. A moon pool is positioned forward of the reel. A direction means is provided for pivoting the aligner wheel over the moon pool to allow pipe takeoff forward of the axis of the aligner wheel and into the moon pool. The aligner wheel is provided with strain gauges along the axle to measure directly the tension of the pipeline being unspooled and passing into the water through the moon pool.Type: GrantFiled: February 3, 1997Date of Patent: February 17, 1998Assignee: J. Ray McDermott, S.A.Inventor: Carlos E. Recalde

Patent number: 5590915Abstract: A reel pipelay vessel is used to lay a first pipeline (6) and a second pipeline (7) subsequently. The second pipeline (7) is spooled on top of the first pipeline (6) at a shore base by use of transition joint (11) secured to the trailing end of the first pipeline (6) and to the leading end of the second pipeline (7). A variety of transition joints are described. In each case, the bending characteristic of the transition joint is selected to avoid buckling during spooling of the pipe transition. In an alternative embodiment the transition joint comprises a first pipe section (21) of first diameter hingeably connected to a second pipe section (22) of second diameter, the first and second pipe sections being bent to a common radius corresponding to the radius of curvature of the first pipe when spooled onto a reel.Type: GrantFiled: July 28, 1994Date of Patent: January 7, 1997Assignee: Stena Offshore LimitedInventor: Carlos E. Patent number: 5533834Abstract: A reel pipelaying vessel includes pipe conditioning apparatus at its stern. The pipe conditioning apparatus includes a radius control device for imparting a substantially uniform curve to the pipe after it is unspooled from the reel, straightening apparatus for imparting a reverse bending force to the pipe opposite to the curvature imparted to the pipe by the reel, and apparatus for guiding the pipe into the water after it emerges from the straightening apparatus. The pipe conditioning apparatus is pivotable about a pivot axis to adjust the pipe entry angle at which the pipe enters the water. A stinger assembly is located at the downstream end of the pipe conditioning apparatus, extending sternwards of the vessel, and arranged to further increase the entry angle of the pipe after it exits the pipe conditioning apparatus. The stinger is curved and is provided with a series of pipe supporting rollers or pipe supporting endless conveyors apparatus.Type: GrantFiled: July 22, 1994Date of Patent: July 9, 1996Assignee: Stena Offshore LimitedInventor: Carlos E.
