Abstract: A barrier for damming or channeling surface water flow is comprised of a non-woven polymer fabric sleeve within which is contained a water absorbent material which, upon contact with sufficient water, swells up to 20 or more times its initial weight. Preferred barriers have a D-shape front lobe and a rear lobe that inhibits overturning of the barrier during use. The water absorbent material is contained within a sheet that is captured by stitching which is the separator between the front and rear lobes. Barriers made of a dark color such as black or brown non-woven polypropylene fabric, and containing a super absorbent polymer (SAP), only minimally degrade in function when exposed to prolonged sunlight.
