  • Patent number: 4718819
Abstract: A variable geometry device is provided for synchronous control of flow of fluid at the compressor inlet and outlet of a turbine engine. The turbine engine includes a support housing, a compressor contained within the support housing, a set of variable inlet guide vanes and a compressed air outlet in which a pair of spaced walls define an annular and radially extending diffuser passageway. The inner end of the diffuser passageway is open to the compressor outlet while the outer end of the diffuser passageway is open to the combustion chamber for the turbine engine. A plurality of circumferentially spaced diffuser vanes are mounted to one of the diffuser walls and protrude across the diffuser passageway. An annular recessed channel is formed around the opposite diffuser wall and an annular ring with a hollow cavity is mounted within the channel.

  • Patent number: 4650397
Abstract: A seal member particularly adapted to seal leakage gaps between turbine vanes in a variable geometry turbine vane assembly comprises a sheet metal strip having a first flange and a second flange angularly disposed with respect to the first flange. The first flange is an anchoring flange comprising separated segments adapted to be secured to a turbine wall on one side of the leakage gap. The other flange is a sealing flange adapted to engage the member on the opposite side of the gap. The spring tension of the metal strip urging the sealing flange against the member can be enlarged or replaced by various means for urging the sealing flange against other member such as a differential pressure across the seal member and the formation of the sealing strip with heat sensitive metals.

  • Patent number: 4552308
Abstract: A variable geometry device for use with the turbine nozzle of a turbine engine of the type having a support housing and a combustion chamber contained within the support housing. A pair of spaced walls in the support housing define an annular and radially extending nozzle passageway. The outer end of the nozzle passageway is open to the combustion chamber while the inner end of the nozzle passageway is open to one or more turbine stages. A plurality of circumferentially spaced nozzle vanes are mounted to one of the spaced walls and protrude across the nozzle passageway. An annular opening is formed around the opposite spaced wall and an annular ring is axially slidably mounted within the opening. A motor is operatively connected to this ring and, upon actuation, axially displaces the ring within the nozzle passageway.

  • Patent number: 4531886
Abstract: A drum pump for a turbine which comprises a turbine housing having an internal wall defining an interior cylindrical chamber. A cylindrical drum having an outer cylindrical surface and an annular channel formed on its inner surface is coaxially rotatably mounted to the housing within the housing chamber so that the outer periphery of the drum is spaced radially inwardly from the housing wall. A pair of axially spaced annular fluid seals extend between the housing and the outer periphery of the drum and form an annular outlet chamber therebetween. At least one outlet passageway is formed in the housing and open to the outlet chamber while, similarly, a connecting passageway is formed from the drum and extends between the channel and the outlet chamber. A fluid jet supplies fluid to the drum channel so that, upon rotation of the drum, the fluid is centrifugally pumped out through the connecting passageway, to the outlet chamber and out through the outlet passageway in the housing.

  • Patent number: 4403914
Abstract: A variable geometry device is provided for use in a turbine engine having a support housing, a rotor contained within the support housing and a pair of spaced walls forming an annular and radially extending passageway open at one end to the rotor. An annular recessed channel is formed in one of the support housing walls while a ring is mounted within the channel and movable between a retracted position in which the ring is nested within the channel and an extended position in which the ring protrudes transversely into and variably restricts the passageway so that the restriction of the fluid passageway is substantially proportional to the transverse position of the ring. A plurality of circumferentially spaced vanes are secured to the ring and these vanes extend transversely across the fluid passageway and are slidably received within slots formed in the other support housing wall.
