    Abstract: A spittoon system is provided for avoiding formation of an ink stalagmite during spitting of a pigment-based ink from a first printhead of an inkjet printing mechanism. First, ink is spit from a second inkjet printhead containing a dye-based ink formulation and accumulated in a pool defined by spittoon reservoir having a catch basin. The catch basin is configured to splatter and dissipate the pigment-based ink upon impacting the accumulated pool of ink. The spittoon preferably has funnel-shaped tapering walls that resist collection of the pigment-based ink, to avoid formation of an initial base portion of the ink stalagmite. A method of avoiding formation of such an ink stalagmite, along with an inkjet printing mechanism having such a spittoon system, are also provided.

    Abstract: A storage and spittoon system is provided for an inkjet printing mechanism to handle waste inkjet ink that has been spit from an inkjet printhead during a nozzle clearing, purging or “spitting” routine. A rotating spit wheel has a rim with a concave cross sectional shape which receives ink residue spit from the printhead. A compliant scraper is spring biased to contact the spit wheel rim at a substantially tangential orientation to scrape the ink residue from the rim as the wheel is rotated past the scraper. The scraper directs the ink residue into a storage container as a string-like strip which is then packed to into a storage container as the spit wheel rotates. A method of purging ink residue from an inkjet printhead, along with an inkjet printing mechanism having such a waste ink storage and spittoon system, are also provided.

    Abstract: A wet-wiping printhead cleaning system wherein a treatment fluid is applied to at least one of the printhead and wiper elements in an inkjet printer, then subsequently the wiper wipingly contacts the printhead and wipes a portion of the printhead orifice plate where the nozzle orifices are located removing dried ink and other accumulated debris, the treatment fluid lubricating the wiper so as to lengthen wiper service life and enhance wiping performance, as well as acting to render such accumulations more removable by wiping, wherein the treatment fluid is stored in a non-flowable state so as to prevent leaking during periods when the printer is not in use, the treatment fluid being changed to a flowable liquid state for wiping.

    Abstract: A wet-wiping printhead cleaning system including a source of treatment fluid further including a treatment fluid reservoir and a treatment fluid transfer element adapted to transfer treatment fluid from the reservoir to at least one of the two elements involved in wiping the printhead, the two such elements consisting of the printhead and the wiper, the transfer element thereby acts as an applicator placing treatment fluid onto said at least one element, the source of treatment fluid not contacting said one element directly, and the treatment fluid then is available to assist in cleaning the printhead as it is wiped by the wiper, removing accumulated dried ink solids and other debris, the treatment fluid lubricating the wiper so as to lengthen wiper service life and enhance wiping performance, as well as acting to render such accumulations more removable by wiping.

    Abstract: A multi-finned wiping system is provided for wiping an inkjet printhead that accumulates ink residue when used in an inkjet printing mechanism. A service station supports a wiper that contacts and wipes ink residue from the printhead. The service station also supports a cleaner that contacts and cleans the wiper. Either the wiper or the cleaner maybe constructed is of a resilient material comprising plural fins arranged to define an interstice between adjacent fins to capture the ink residue in the interstice. Interaction of the wiper and cleaner during the cleaning process pumps ink residue from the interstice to ready the fins for the next cleaning cycle. An inkjet printing mechanism having such a finned wiping system is also provided, along with a method of wiping accumulated ink residue from an inkjet printhead installed in an inkjet printing mechanism.
