Abstract: An apparatus and method for setting a control command in response to a touch area and controlling an application in a portable terminal through a simple touch input is provided. The apparatus includes a control command determination unit and a control unit. The control command determination unit detects a control command of an application corresponding to an area touched by a user when a touch input is sensed while the application works. The control unit controls an operation of the working application by using the control command detected by the control command determination unit.

Abstract: An apparatus and method for decreasing the number of bearer connections by transmitting a data packet in order to determine a network connection status at a time of bearer connection necessarily performed by a portable terminal together with a location registration message. Reduced battery consumption in the portable terminal is achieved because of the reduced number of bearer connections. The apparatus includes a transmission time determination unit for reconfiguring a data packet transmission time to a time of bearer connection necessarily performed by the portable terminal when a data packet is transmitted to determine the network connection status, and a controller for providing control to transmit the data packet is transmitted while connecting the bearer at the reconfigured data packet transmission time, wherein the reconfigured data packet transmission time may be advanced or delayed of the initial transmission time.

Abstract: An apparatus and method for calculating a current position of a portable terminal not supporting a function of obtaining position information, such as a Global Positioning System (GPS) function, by receiving position information from neighbor terminals of the portable terminal are disclosed. The apparatus includes a controller for calculating the current position of the portable terminal from received position information from neighbor terminals and processing the received position to determine the current position.

Abstract: A method and an apparatus for determining validity of a mobile subscriber identifier in a mobile communication terminal are provided. In the method, a temporary identifier assigned from a network is stored in a memory and a SIM card of the terminal. When a network authentication event occurs, the temporary identifier stored in the memory is compared with the temporary identifier stored in the SIM card. An identifier to be transmitted to the network is determined among an International Mobile Subscriber Identity (IMSI) and the temporary identifier stored in the SIM card depending on a result of the comparison.

Abstract: A mobile communication system and cell searching method of the mobile communication network is provided for simplifying a synchronization process required for selecting a target cell. The cell searching method for a mobile communication system includes transmitting, at a base station, a first synchronization signal of a first slot of a frame of a first channel at a higher transmission power than a transmission power of a remainder of the frame of the first channel, acquiring, at a mobile station, a slot synchronization using the first synchronization signal, and acquiring, at the mobile station, a frame synchronization using a second synchronization signal of a second channel, wherein the second synchronization signal corresponds to the first synchronization signal.

Abstract: A mobile terminal and cell selection method for the same are provided. The cell selection method includes receiving a system information message from a first communication system, extracting information regarding a second communication system from the received system information message and selecting a cell of the second communication system using the extracted information, wherein information on cells of the second communication system neighboring a cell of the first communication system is extracted from the system information message. Accordingly, the present invention improves efficiency and reduces power consumption in a mobile communication terminal.

Abstract: A method and an apparatus for controlling power for transmission of a preamble for acquisition of a channel are provided. The method for controlling power for transmission of a preamble includes calculating an initial preamble transmission power using an initial power calculated using information broadcast through a forward common channel and a stored difference value, transmitting the preamble through a backward common channel with the initial preamble transmission power and replacing the stored difference by a difference obtained by subtracting the initial power from the initial preamble transmission power and storing the obtained difference instead of the stored difference, when an acknowledge to the preamble is received.

Abstract: A method for improving the network search rate by reducing the manual network search time in a radio communication system. System information messages are periodically broadcast, and the messages include a Master Information Block (MIB) containing location area information regarding at least one Public Land Mobile Network (PLMN). The MIB of the system information message received from the network is read during a network search by a User-Equipment (UE), displaying a PLMN list, and reading a System Information Block (SIB) of a PLMN selected from the PLMN list.

Abstract: Provided is a method for measuring a neighbor cell signal in a portable terminal includes acquiring a minimum required quality level value and a threshold for an intra-frequency measurement from received system information; calculating a measured cell quality value after the acquiring step; and commencing a neighbor cell signal measurement for an intra-frequency cell reselection when a value acquired by subtracting the minimum required quality level value from the measured cell quality value is less than or equal to a value acquired by adding the threshold and a certain signal strength value over a certain time. In the neighbor cell signal measurement for the cell reselection, the unnecessary neighbor cell signal measurement can be avoided to reduce the power consumption and extend the battery lifetime.

Abstract: Provided is an apparatus and method for providing a packet service in a mobile communication system. An RNC broadcasts an SIB signal including Always-On availability information. Upon receipt of an RRC connection request message for requesting an Always-On mode, the RNC maintains a preservation state in communication with a core network. A UE detects the Always-On availability information in the SIB signal received from the RNC to determine whether the Always-On mode is available. If the Always-On mode is available, the UE generates the RRC connection request message to transmit the generated RRC connection request message to the RNC.

Abstract: An apparatus and a method for cell search for transmitting an emergency call in a dual mode terminal supporting a Global System for Mobile communication (GSM) and a Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS) are provided. A cell search for transmitting the emergency call is performed for all networks even though the network mode set by the user is different from the network installed in the region where the mobile communication terminal is located.
