    Abstract: The device for satinizing and embossing metallized or surface-treated packaging foils comprises three embossing rolls, all three embossing rolls cooperating with one another and the packaging foil being capable of being passed under pressure between the first and the second and between the first and the third embossing rolls in order to produce a satin-finish and a pattern. The first, driven embossing roll has a tooth array composed of individual teeth that are arranged in a homogenous grid, and the other two embossing rolls each have a surface structure that differs from that of the first embossing roll. At least one of the additional embossing rolls has structural elements that are arranged individually or in groups but not in the same grid as on the first roll, the structural element being composed of individual teeth and being arranged circularly on the embossing roll. Such an arrangement provides an effective breaking of the paper substrate of the foil and thus a surface having improved properties.

    Abstract: In the method for the authentication of identification features that are embossed on a packaging foil together with satin-finishing and the embossing of logos, a number of identification features is embossed on-line as a pattern and read by a suitable apparatus and evaluated by means of an image evaluation method. The embossing device (1) suitable therefor includes at least two embossing rollers (2, 3, 15), a reading unit, and an evaluating unit, one of the embossing rollers (2) being driven by the motor drive mechanism (5) and having individual teeth (8) of which a number of teeth for embossing identification features have a different shape, height, or surface structure while the remaining teeth serve for satin-finishing, and one of the mating rollers (3) being provided with circumferential rings (10). Such a method and such a device allow a relatively simpler embossing device with relatively lower requirements with regard to the embossing quality than in methods of the prior art.

The patterned flat material may be fed between these embossing rolls, in order to be embossed again with essentially the same pattern. In a simplified embodiment, only a total of two rolls are used. In order to achieve as precise an embossing as possible, with special effects, the first driven embossing roll is provided with teeth, while at least one other embossing roll comprises rings or longitudinal ribs, or is smooth.

The design of the device facilitates attachment to the plant by wrapping the primary substrate around a portion of the plant and attaching a portion of the at least one adhesive area to a portion of the primary substrate.     Abstract: The apparatus for satin-finishing and embossing flat material comprises a first toothed roller and at least a second toothed roller, with the rollers being disposed in such a way that a tooth each of a roller engages between four teeth of the other roller. One of the rollers comprises at least a microstructure and the other roller is provided at the respective place with a counter-pressure surface. The microstructure is applied to a hard surface layer which is applied via an intermediate layer to the roller surface. The method is especially advantageous if a film with a thermoplastic intermediate layer is used. Such an apparatus allows embossing logos with microstructures at all desired locations of the rollers, thus offering a high amount of security against falsification and a large variety of design features.

In the case of complex treatments, it is advantageous to synchronize the embossing rolls. Particularly in the case of paper having a thin metallization, the following additional embossing roll which re-embosses the pattern allows to avoid higher contact pressures causing increased wear, and a substantially improved folding behavior is obtained.

    Abstract: The embossing rolls of embossing devices serving for the treatment of two-dimensionally extending materials, preferably in the packaging industry, may be made exchangeable if they are disposed in suitable interchangeable units. An interchangeable unit may e.g. take the form of a sleeve having its ends provided with fitting surfaces. The mount of an embossing device comprises corresponding seats which are very precisely adapted to the actual interchangeable unit. In the inserted condition, i.e. when the fitting surfaces of the retaining elements are inserted in the associated seats, the embossing roll contained in an exchangeable unit is thus placed in its operational position without requiring any further adjusting operations. Particularly the driven embossing roll of such an embossing device is thus substantially less complicated to exchange, thereby allowing quick maintenance and production changeovers.

    Abstract: The embossing process is effected between a pair of embossing rollers provided with toothings of the same kind which comprise rows of pyramidal teeth extending in the axial and the circumferential directions. Compared to the theoretical pyramid shape, the heads of the teeth are flattened while the edges of the pyramids are cut. The rollers, which are mutually displaceable in the axial direction, are thus able to catch in a stable mutual position of maximum penetration and to remain in this position in operation. This allows a safe mutual synchronization of the rollers and an optimal embossing of any kind of materials, especially of paper foils.

    Abstract: Two rolls, more particularly embossing rolls are provided which are pressed against each other by pneumatic cylinders for the purpose of fashioning a flat material passing between the rolls. The ends of one of the roll axles are journalled in slides which are actuatable by the cylinders in such a manner as to be deflectable in the pressure direction and in the travelling direction of the material. The elastically suspended roll is thus capable of automatically adjusting itself in such a manner that the axles of the two rolls can adjust to irregularities of the flat material and thus allow a disturbance-free and qualitatively optimal treatment of the material.
