    Abstract: An aromatic or aromatic-like group(s) containing lubricant configured to be adsorbed by a magnetic recording media is formed from (Ar)m(R1oRfR2p)q where Ar is an aromatic group, polyaromatic hydrocarbon (PAH), annulene, cycloalkane or heterocycle, m=1-10, R1 and R2 are moieties containing first and second polar groups, respectively, Rf is a perfluorinated polyether, o=1-10, p=0-10, and q=1-10. The first or second polar group may independently be hydroxyl, phosphonic acid, silanol or carboxylic acid. In an embodiment, the lubricant has the formula: where Ar is a system form d from a PAH, armulene, cycloalkane or heterocycle, X, Y and Z can independently be hydroxyl, a phosphonic acid moiety, a silanol or a carboxylic acid moiety, and where Rf may be CF2O(CF2CF2)nCF2— where n is 1 to 100. Synthesizing the lubricant may entail reacting parabromophenol with (Ar)m(R1oRfR2p)q.

    Abstract: A venthole of a micromechanical device is sealed with laser irradiation. A micromechanical device has a substrate, such as silicon. The substrate has an upper surface, and defines a venthole leading to a chamber that contains a device, and a trench extending downward from the upper surface and located offset from the venthole. A laser pulse is applied to the substrate at or within the trench. This causes a portion of the substrate located below the upper surface to melt and travel laterally to close off and seal the venthole laterally from beneath the upper surface.

The memory controller performs a sparing transaction comprising reading data from a given location of one or more of the memory chips including a first memory chip, writing the data to a given location of one or more of the memory chips including a second memory chip, wherein during writing, data from the first memory chip is written to the second memory chip, and allowing additional memory transactions directed to the memory chips between the start of reading and the end of writing unless the additional memory transaction is targeted to the given location. In a further embodiment, the sparing transaction comprises correcting errors in the data before writing the data.

    Abstract: A glass disk substrate inspection tool uses a polarized laser beam that is directed to the first surface of the disk substrate at Brewster's angle and is then transmitted through the disk substrate to a light detector that generates a signal representative of the intensity of the light received. Because the light polarized parallel to the plane of incidence, i.e., the plane formed by the line of the incident beam and a line perpendicular to the surface of the disk substrate, is completely transmitted, there is no surface reflection at either the first or second surfaces of the disk substrate. The polarized beam is directed by a first rotating scanner to the input of a telecentric lens assembly that provides an output beam parallel to its optical axis as the beam is being scanned. The beam is then directed by a first fixed mirror to strike the first surface of the disk substrate at Brewster's angle as the beam is scanned along a line across the first disk surface.
