  • Patent number: 5752963
Abstract: An improved suture anchor driver includes a handle and an extending elongated shaft adapted for passing through arthroscopic portals. The distal end of the shaft engages the suture anchor. The shaft is cannulated to allow passage of a suture from the anchor to the handle. The shaft also has a slot in its wall and extending along most of its length in communication with the interior of the shaft. The handle has a grooved knob and adjacent resilient cap for retaining a needle. A sliding member is positioned on the shaft adjacent the needle. The intermediate portion of the suture is looped through an elastic hole in order to maintain it in tension. In use, the anchor is driven into tissue. As the driver is withdrawn, the suture pulls out of the elastic hole and through the shaft. The suture then pulls the needle from the groove. A portion of the needle slides in the slot as the needle travels along the cannula. The sliding member is pulled along by the needle.

  • Patent number: 5702388
Abstract: The invention is directed to a retainer (10, 12, 70) for securing a sponge (16) at the point of entry for an orthopaedic elongate member (14). The retainer (10, 12, 70) is removably attachable to the elongate member (14) adjacent the sponge. The retainer, in one embodiment, includes a body (22) having a bottom (24) and a side (26), with the side (26) being disposed adjacent to the bottom (24). The body (22) further includes an opening (34) associated with each of the bottom (24) and the side (26). The opening (34) is configured for receiving the elongate member (14) therein. A clamp (40) is movably attached to the body (22) and engageable with the elongate member (14) for retaining the elongate member (14) within the opening (34). A resilient member (50) is integral or engaged with the clamp (40) for biasing the clamp (40) into engagement with the elongate member (14).

  • Patent number: 5676664
Abstract: The invention is directed to an apparatus for externally reducing and/or fixating a fracture in a bone. The apparatus includes a radiolucent rod, and a carriage assembly with a clamp assembly for connection to a fixation pin. A sleeve is threadingly connected with the carriage assembly and is disposed about the rod. A clamping device interconnects the sleeve with the rod at a selective one of a plurality of locations along a length of the rod. Rotation of the sleeve relative to the carriage assembly moves the rod in an axial direction relative to the carriage assembly.

  • Patent number: 5522827
Abstract: An apparatus and method for harvesting a tendon graft beneath the overlying tissues through a remote incision which exposes only a portion of the donor tendon from which the graft will be harvested. The apparatus or tendon harvester 10 includes an elongated tubular shaft 20 connected to a cylindrical handle 30 and a length of flexible cutting wire or cable 12. A needle 16 is connected to one end of the cable 12 which extends from the distal end of the shaft 20. The needle end of the cable 12 is affixed to the distal end of the shaft 20 to form a cable loop for slitting the tendon 4.
