  • Publication number: 20200011134
Abstract: A bi-mill mills an opening through a wellbore casing in a preplanned lateral drilling path in departure from the wellbore axis and through the wellbore casing or rock formation and in the direction of the drilling path. The bi-mill provides increase debris removal and cutting surfaces and includes an assembly having a lead mill and a follow mill and attaches to the wellbore whipstock. The lead mill further includes fluid passageways leading from the lead mill and exiting the nose of the lead mill. Debris removal channels channel milled debris away from the lead mill and in the direction of the follow mill form in a helical configuration for guiding debris milled by lead mill inserts along the debris removal channels. The lead mill and follow mill continue milling through the wellbore casing and into the underground rock formation a distance sufficient to initiate the preplanned drilling path.

  • Patent number: 9512680
Abstract: A coring system and method enable a single-trip operation for setting a deflector assembly, deploying a coring assembly and obtaining a core sample from a borehole drilled in a wellbore. The coring assembly has a barrel with a bore for collecting the core sample and has a coring bit coupled to an end portion of the barrel. The deflector system is arranged to deflect the coring bit into a side wall of the wellbore to drill the borehole therein. The deflector system includes a deflector and a collar. The collar, coupled to the deflector, restricts upward movement of the coring assembly relative to the deflector assembly. The collar may also be used as a retrieval device to engage the coring assembly and permit removal of the coring assembly and the deflector assembly as well as the core sample after the core sample has been obtained.

  • Patent number: 8978783
Abstract: The expandable tools disclosed herein may be used as an underreamer to enlarge a borehole, or may be used to stabilize a drilling system in a previously underreamed borehole or in a borehole that is being underreamed while drilling progresses. At least one moveable arm, which translates between a collapsed and expanded position in response to a differential pressure between the axial flowbore and the wellbore, includes a borehole-engaging surface with cutting elements and at least one nozzle to direct a fluid across the borehole-engaging surface. Flow directing elements on the external surface of the tool may be used to decrease the flow area in an annulus between the tool and the wellbore and directs fluid flow in the annulus toward the borehole-engaging surface.

  • Publication number: 20120298423
Abstract: Various embodiments of an expandable downhole tool for use in drilling of a wellbore are disclosed. The expandable tools disclosed herein may be used as an underreamer to enlarge a borehole, or may be used to stabilize a drilling system in a previously underreamed borehole or in a borehole that is being underreamed while drilling progresses. The various embodiments of the expandable tools disclosed herein have a higher hydraulic capacity than prior art underreamers. An increase in hydraulic energy delivered to the cutting structures may advantageously improve the rate of removal of cuttings from the cutting structures (improved cuttings evacuation), may decrease cutter element wear, and may prevent damage or premature failure. Improved cuttings evacuation may also provide for improved cutting action and increased penetration rates.
