This cultivar is distinguishable from other cultivars by its small to medium-sized heart- to spade-shaped dark purple leaves. The plant has a good vigor, but is less vigorous than Ipomoea batatas ‘Margarita’ and ‘Blackie’, and unlike these cultivars, ‘Sweet Caroline Sweetheart Purple’ may be grown in containers with other species. The production of flowers by ‘Sweet Caroline Sweetheart Purple’ is relatively rare even under short day conditions.

This cultivar is distinguishable from other cultivars by small, heart-shaped, light green to chartreuse colored leaves and erect to semi-erect architecture. The plant has good vigor, is very well branched, and has thin stems that tend to intertwine. It is much less vigorous than Ipomoea batatas ‘Margarita’ and ‘Blackie’, and is well suited for container production. The production of flowers by ‘Sweet Caroline Sweetheart Light Green’ is rare even under short day conditions.

    Abstract: Ipomoea batatas ‘Sweet Caroline Red’ has a very distinct coloration; new shoots are yellow-green in color and transition to a dark burgundy-red color when mature. The stems and petioles of the mature plant are also dark burgundy-red in color. The leaves are large, palmately lobed and veined. ‘Sweet Caroline Red’ has a moderately compact growth habit and is a low, mounding-to-trailing plant with an overall oval shape that is suitable for use as a ground cover or in containerized landscape settings. The plant also has excellent vigor.
