Publication number: 20100319727Abstract: An apparatus for insertion between parallel press plates and cleaning the press plates is disclosed. The cleaning apparatus comprises an abrasive assembly and a linear motor. The abrasive assembly is attached to a first movable member of the linear motor and/or a second movable member of a linear motor. The linear motor is operated using an air pressure supply. As the cleaning apparatus is moved between the parallel press plates, unwanted residue is removed from the parallel press plates.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 23, 2009Publication date: December 23, 2010Inventor: Charles J. Patent number: 6360588Abstract: The subject invention pertains to the efficient and accurate detection and analysis of materials passing through a membrane. In a specific example the transport of materials through skin is analyzed. The subject method can allow accurate, precise, and specific real time measurements of compounds crossing a membrane. Accordingly, the subject method can save time in product development of pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and protective clothing products, and can also reduce the need for animal and human testing.Type: GrantFiled: November 24, 1999Date of Patent: March 26, 2002Inventors: Edward Allan Ross, Ian R. Patent number: 5927664Abstract: A static support device and associated method used to position tilt-in windows into an orientation that is ergonomically efficient for washing. The static support device includes an adjustable elongated member that is held in a vertical orientation by a free standing stand. A cross member is pivotably coupled to the top of the elongated member, wherein the cross member can be locked into an orientation that is generally perpendicular to the vertically supported elongated member. As a result, the overall static support device can assume a free standing T-shaped configuration. The static support device is positioned adjacent to a tilt-in window, whereby the sashes of the window can be tilted to a point where the sash rests upon the cross member. The cross member is padded to prevent damage to the sash. Furthermore, the slip stop elements extend upward from the cross member that engage the frame of the sash.Type: GrantFiled: December 9, 1994Date of Patent: July 27, 1999Inventor: Charles J. Schmidt

Patent number: 4958398Abstract: A robot cleaner for insertion between parallel platens for cleaning the platens. A body having first and second sections movable away and toward each other by an air bladder. Said sections include gripping and scraping blades, each of the sections includes sides movable transversely toward the plate by a bladder. One of the sections grips the platens while the second section traverses across the plates and scrapes and cleans the plates.Type: GrantFiled: August 7, 1989Date of Patent: September 25, 1990Inventor: Charles J. Patent number: 4806913Abstract: An apparatus for detecting when bolts, holding coacting surfaces of two objects together become loose. A gas supply is connected to a gas passageway in one of the bodies which extends to the coacting surfaces. A gas reservoir is positioned downstream of the gas supply and a flow orifice is connected to downstream of the reservoir. A pressure measuring switch is connected to the gas passageway and is actuated upon a drop of gas pressure to a predetermined value. An alarm is connected to the switch and when actuated provides an indication of the separation of the coacting surfaces.Type: GrantFiled: May 5, 1988Date of Patent: February 21, 1989Inventor: Charles J. Schmidt

Patent number: 4766437Abstract: Antenna apparatus for changing the antenna radiation pattern includes a transmitter and first and second antenna members. Each antenna member has a plurality of antenna elements which are arranged such that the elements of each antenna member are exponentially amplitude fed. A directional coupler responsive to the transmitter divides the power from the transmitter between the first and second antenna members such that each antenna member is provided with a signal of equal amplitude and phase. A variable phase shifter connected between the directional coupler and one of the antenna members is selectively operable either at 0.degree., or at a predetermined value in the range of about 60.degree. to 120.degree.. A symmetrical pencil beam pattern is provided when the variable phase shifter is set at 0.degree., and a cosecant squared pattern is provided when the variable phase shifter is set at a value in the range of about 60.degree. to 120.degree..Type: GrantFiled: January 9, 1987Date of Patent: August 23, 1988Assignee: Grumman Aerospace CorporationInventors: Charles J. Schmidt, Victor J. Albanese

Patent number: 4754788Abstract: A four-bladed chuck for attachment to a drive spindle of a veneer lathe. The blades include a first flat side for providing a driving area and a second side in a plane perpendicular to the first side of an adjacent blade. The bottom of the second side extends outwardly from the chuck at the outside of the chuck providing an uprise at the outside of the chuck for holding an end of the log for reducing splitting of the log end and holding a split log together. The plane of the second side is approximately 15 degrees relative to the longitudinal axis for reducing splitting. The blades in the uprise are shaped and formed by circular end mill cutter or by casting.Type: GrantFiled: September 4, 1987Date of Patent: July 5, 1988Inventor: Charles J. Schmidt

Patent number: 4554958Abstract: An apparatus for rounding the circumference of a wood log which is supported by two sets of three drive rollers at spaced points between the ends of the log to establish a geometrical center. A knife is positioned extending the length of the log for cutting off a portion of the log for rounding the circumference of the log. The lower rollers are connected together through a shock absorber to accommodate varying diameters and one roller of each set is connected together by a torsion bar. One of the lower rollers of each set is positioned upwardly relative to the other lower roller an amount for allowing the apparatus to provide a maximum yield from different diameter logs. The rollers are of a plurality of self-cleaning, rotatable drive discs. The apparatus may include debarking arms. And the apparatus may sort the rounded up logs by diameter size.Type: GrantFiled: May 17, 1984Date of Patent: November 26, 1985Assignee: Arthur Temple, IIIInventor: Charles J. Schmidt

Patent number: 4450448Abstract: An apparatus and method for use in an n-element electronically scannable array antenna provides a notched auxillary radiation pattern for use in reducing interference energy received in the sidelobes of the antenna's main radiation pattern. The apparatus includes circuitry for feeding the antenna elements in series from one end of the array to the opposed end thereof. Each antenna element is fed through a directional coupler which is responsive to its associated antenna element along with the downstream antenna elements in the array. The directional couplers provide a first output signal for forming a primary radiation pattern. At least one directional coupler also provides a second output signal on receive for forming an auxiliary radiation pattern having a notch in the direction of the primary radiation pattern main beam and electronically steerable therewith, and a relatively uniform response in all other directions.Type: GrantFiled: August 28, 1981Date of Patent: May 22, 1984Assignee: Grumman Aerospace CorporationInventors: Victor J. Albanese, Charles J. Schmidt

Patent number: 4335764Abstract: A veneer peeling apparatus having a fixed rotatable roller and a cutting knife. First and second movable rollers are positioned below the first roller. The first and second rollers are movable toward and away from the fixed roller and each other. Rotating means are connected to both ends of each of the rollers thereby rotating a log positioned between the rollers and against the knife. An automatic log feeding trough leads to a position between the fixed roller and above the first roller whereby a log automatically moves between all of the rollers when the movable rollers are retracted. The first roller includes flanges at each end limiting lateral movement of a log. The speed of rotation of the surface of the fixed roller is slower than the speed of rotation of the surfaces of the movable rollers. A plurality of space support bearings support each of the movable rollers along their lengths allowing the use of smaller rollers which can move closer to each other to move veneer.Type: GrantFiled: December 17, 1980Date of Patent: June 22, 1982Inventor: Charles J. Schmidt
