  • Patent number: 8147574
Abstract: THIS INVENTION relates to a method of making a diamond containing material comprising diamond particles and a second phase containing an intermetallic compound comprising the steps of providing a reaction mass of reactants capable, on reaction, of producing carbon and an intermetallic compound and subjecting the reaction mass to diamond synthesis conditions. In an embodiment of the invention, the diamond containing material produced is polycrystalline diamond (PCD) and the reaction mass contains diamond particles in an amount sufficient to allow PCD to be produced. In a further embodiment of the invention, the diamond content in the diamond containing material produced does not exceed 70 volume %.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: November 21, 2007
Date of Patent: April 3, 2012
    Inventor: Charles Stephan Montross
  • Publication number: 20100287845
Abstract: The invention is for a polycrystalfine diamond composite material comprising intergrown diamond particles and a binder phase, the binder phase comprising a tin-based intermetallic or ternary carbide compound formed with a metallic solvent/catalyst. The invention extends to a polycrystalline diamond abrasive compact comprising such a composite material and to a tool insert comprising such a diamond abrasive compact.
    Type: Application
    Filed: August 29, 2008
    Publication date: November 18, 2010
Inventors: Charles Stephan Montross, Humphrey Sithebe
  • Publication number: 20100199573
Abstract: The invention is for an ultrahard composite material comprising a diamond phase and a binder phase, the binder phase comprising a ternary carbide of the general formula Mx M?y C wherein; M is at least one metal selected from the group consisting of the transition metals and the rare earth metals, M? is a metal selected from the group consisting of the main group metals or metalloid elements and the transition metals Zn and Cd, x is from 2.5 to 5.0, y is from 0.5 to 3.0 and z is from 0.1 to 1. The invention extends to a diamond abrasive compact comprising such an ultrahard composite material and to a tool comprising such a diamond abrasive compact.
