Publication number: 20170241206Abstract: A horizontal directional drilling sonde housing has a cavity for receiving a sonde. Signal channels extend from the cavity to an exterior of the housing. A polymer lines at least part of the cavity and fills the signal channels. The drilling tool has a bit body and a drilling body. The two bodies have respective lateral surfaces which engage each other to prevent the transverse movement of the drilling body relative to the bit body during operations. The drill bit has a forward extending drill tooth, which drill tooth is removable from a bore. A spacer is located in the bore between the bottom end of the bore and the tooth. The drilling bit has buttons located on the side in a spiral configuration about a longitudinal axis of the bit.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 24, 2016Publication date: August 24, 2017Inventor: Charles T. Webb

Patent number: 8397364Abstract: First and second components can be releasably coupled together with a locking pin having a sacrificial o-ring. The first and second components have respective first and second openings that are aligned with each other and receive the locking pin. The second opening has a square edge located adjacent to a recess in the first opening. The o-ring has an outside diameter greater than the diameter of the square edge and an inside diameter less than the diameter of the square edge when assembled. The locking pin is inside of the first and second openings, with the o-ring inside of the recess. To release the components, the locking pin is moved out of the first opening to shear the o-ring against the square edge.Type: GrantFiled: May 18, 2011Date of Patent: March 19, 2013Inventor: Charles T. Patent number: 7810582Abstract: An electrical generating system is used for a horizontal directional drilling system. The drilling system has a generally horizontal drill stem that rotates. A generator has first and second components. The first component rotates with the drill stem, while the second component is able to rotate with respect to the first component. An eccentric mass is rotatably mounted inside of the drill stem and is coupled to the second component, wherein as the drill stem rotates, relative rotational motion is produced between the first and second components and the generator produces electrical power. The eccentric mass is mounted on two spaced apart mounting points inside of the drill stem. The generator provides power to a sonde. The generator is in a housing which has flow channels that allow drilling fluid to flow through the drill stem.Type: GrantFiled: November 17, 2008Date of Patent: October 12, 2010Inventor: Charles T. Patent number: 6401842Abstract: The apparatus includes an annular cam rotatably located in a housing with a drill shaft extending through the cam and housing. The shaft can be rotated for drilling purposes and be moved longitudinally in the housing for shifting purposes. The cam has grooves in its outer surface for receiving a cam follower carried by the shaft which rotates the cam as the shaft is moved longitudinally for shifting purposes. The shaft may be moved longitudinally in one direction to a position to engage members of a clutch such that when the shaft rotates, it rotates the housing. The shaft is movable in an opposite direction to disengage the clutch members and then is movable to locate the cam follower in the groove at different positions to allow the operator to control the longitudinal position of the shaft for turning purposes or for drilling straight.Type: GrantFiled: July 25, 2001Date of Patent: June 11, 2002Inventors: Charles T. Webb, Roy L. Chandler

Patent number: 6082470Abstract: The apparatus, in one embodiment has guide housing with a shaft extending through the guide housing with a drill bit coupled to its forward end. The shaft may be moved to a forward drilling position or to a rearward shifting position relative to the guide housing. A cam is located inside of the guide housing. A cam follower is coupled to the shaft. In the shifting mode, the cam follower is disengaged from the cam. A clutch is provided for coupling the cam to the shaft when the shaft is in the shifting position such that the cam follower may be rotated with the shaft relative to the cam to allow the cam follower to engage the cam when the shaft is moved to the forward drilling position. In the forward drilling position of the shaft, the clutch release the cam from the shaft and the cam follower engages the cam to allow straight drilling to occur or to cause the axis of said guide housing to shift relative to the axis of the shaft to cause the direction of drilling by the shaft and drill bit to change.Type: GrantFiled: June 4, 1999Date of Patent: July 4, 2000Assignee: Charles T. Patent number: 5957222Abstract: The apparatus, in one embodiment has a front shaft support and a guide housing coupled together for longitudinal movement relative to each other. A shaft extends through the front shaft support and the guide housing and has a drill bit coupled to its forward end. The shaft and front shaft support may be moved to a forward drilling position or to a rearward shifting position relative to the guide housing. A plurality of cams are coupled to the inside of the guide housing at different angular positions around the shaft. A cam follower is coupled to a cam follower housing which surrounds the shaft. In the shifting mode, the cam follower is disengaged from the cams. A clutch is provided for coupling the cam follower housing to the shaft when the shaft is in the shifting position such that the cam follower housing and the cam follower may be rotated with the shaft relative to the cams to allowed the cam follower to engage a selected one of the cams when the shaft is moved to the forward drilling position.Type: GrantFiled: June 8, 1998Date of Patent: September 28, 1999Assignee: Charles T.
