  • Patent number: 4966347
Abstract: A retainer for a transom-mounted outboard boat motor is mounted on the inside face of the transom generally surrounding the area where the clamping thumb screws of the motor mounting bracket engage the transom. The retainer includes a retaining lip defining an undercut groove which will engage the pads on the clamping thumb screws should the motor shift inadvertently out of position and prevent horizontal sliding or vertical tilting which may result in loss of the motor. The retainer is easily attached to the boat transom and offers no significant interference to attachment or removal of the motor.

  • Patent number: 4776820
Abstract: A pump mechanism continuously operable by the engine of an outboard motor for discharging water that collects by seepage or leakage into the engine cowl. The pump mechanism includes an inlet conduit having an inlet end positioned closely adjacent to the bottom of an inclined channel formed in the lower section of the engine cowl, and an outlet conduit having an outlet end positioned exteriorly of the cowl. A filter disposed in the inlet conduit removes debris from the water and protects the pump mechanism, and a bracket mounted to the engine block holds the inlet end of the inlet conduit closely adjacent to the bottom of the channel.

  • Patent number: 4757971
Abstract: A mounting assembly for an outboard motor includes a motor mount having a transom mounting bracket attachable to a boat transom and a motor supporting bracket spaced aft of and pivotally connected by upper and lower links with the transom mounting bracket to support an outboard motor wholly aft of the boat transom, a cylinder for moving the motor supporting bracket relative to the transom mounting bracket to move the outboard motor between raised and lowered positions, a water sensor for sensing an undesirable seawater level relative to the outboard motor and for generating a signal indicative of the undesirable water level, and an actuator responsive to the undesirable water level signal for actuating the cylinder to raise the outboard motor. An engine speed sensor may also be employed to prevent actuation of the cylinder when the engine speed is above a predetermined speed.

  • Patent number: 4295835
Abstract: An engine driven outboard drive unit for propelling a watercraft has a vertical drive shaft driving a horizontal propeller shaft on which a propeller is mounted. The drive unit has a gearcase torpedo which houses both the propeller shaft and an annular exhaust gas passage. The exhaust passage discharges aft through the plane of the propeller. A small annular projection is formed around the aft end of the torpedo to improve high speed performance.
