  • Patent number: 4551095
Abstract: Attachment of a Herbst mechanism to the maxillary arch by use of a headgear tube is disclosed. A shaft of a length greater than that of the tube passes completely through the tube so as to project both mesially and distally from the tube. The connection of the Herbst mechanism is to that portion of the shaft which projects distally from the tube. A stop is disposed on the shaft mesial of the tube to forcefully bear against the tube with a distally directed force when corrective force is being developed by the appliance. The stop in its preferred embodiment comprises an adjustable locking device which is selectively positionable on the shaft to set the amount of distal extension of the point of connection of the Herbst mechanism from the tube and thereby limit the distal movement of the lower arch and/or jaw.
