  • Publication number: 20070236456
Abstract: An optical navigation system having an illuminator housing and a sensor housing that are movably connected at a connection point with a connection mechanism, which may include a pivot. The illuminator housing and the sensor housing may be rotated about the connection point relative to each other so that the optical navigation system may be configured with a desired operating Z-height. The optical navigation system may also include a locking mechanism to lock the illuminator housing and the sensor housing in a predetermined fixed position after the desired operating Z-height has been selected.

  • Publication number: 20070215792
Abstract: A pointing device and method for using the same to measure the motion of that pointing device over a surface is disclosed. The pointing device includes an illumination system, an imaging system, and a controller. The illumination system generates light in a plurality of wavelength bands and illuminates a surface below the pointing device with light from one of the wavelength bands. The imaging system records images of the illuminated surface. The controller selects the wavelength band used to illuminate the surface, compares first and second images recorded by the imaging system at different times when the surface is illuminated with that wavelength band, and determines a displacement indicative of the direction and distance the positioning device moved between the two different times.

  • Publication number: 20070091064
Abstract: An optical navigation device containing an adjustable depth of field light source is positioned with respect to a surface such that the depth of field of light source can be adjusted to match the Z dimension of a particular surface. In one embodiment, a plurality of individual light sources are used each having a different angle of reflection from the surface. By selecting the light source having an angle of reflection to match the Z dimension of the surface to be navigated the device can be used over a wide range of Z dimensions. In one embodiment, the selection of the proper light source is accomplished upon start-up of the device with respect to a particular surface and in another embodiment a user can adjust the light surface to obtain optimal performance.

  • Publication number: 20070032932
Abstract: In one embodiment, apparatus for providing a visual indication of a position of a steerable wheel includes an encoder and a display system. The encoder has a mechanism for mounting part of the encoder to a movable component of a steering system coupled to the steerable wheel. The encoder produces an output signal related to a position of the movable component. The display system is responsive to the output signal produced by the encoder and displays the visual indication of the position of the steerable wheel. Other embodiments are also disclosed.

  • Publication number: 20060267933
Abstract: Magnetic force is used to re-center a puck in a pointing device or similar transducer-based device. A user can apply finger pressure to move the puck laterally away from the central position. The puck has a first magnet system, and the base of the device has a second magnet system. The magnetic repulsion or other magnetic interaction returns the puck to a central position when the user removes the finger pressure.

  • Publication number: 20060192761
Abstract: An optical computer mouse has a support structure that can be moved across a surface. An illumination source that illuminates a region of the surface is coupled to the support structure. An imaging system in the mouse includes an optical sensor array that receives light from the illuminated region of the work surface and an image processor that receives data from the optical sensor array. The optical computer mouse may be switched between a navigation mode of operation, in which the image processor detects motion of the optical computer mouse over the work surface, and a barcode reading mode of operation, in which the image processor senses a barcode as the optical computer mouse is moved across a barcode.

  • Publication number: 20050215320
Abstract: A game controller having a moveable element and an imaging element that forms an image of a portion of the surface of the moveable element is disclosed. The moveable element has an optically readable pattern on a surface thereof and moves relative to a fixed position. The position of the moveable element at any given time is characterized by the relative position of the moveable element relative to a fixed reference position. The imaging element forms an image of a sub-area on the surface. The sub-area is determined by the relative position of the moveable element relative to the fixed position. A memory stores a map that specifies the readable pattern in each sub-area on the surface that can be imaged by the imaging element. A controller compares the image to the map to determine the position of the moveable element.
