Patent number: 7446831Abstract: A liquid crystal display device (100) includes an upper substrate (12), a lower substrate (11), and a liquid crystal layer (130) between the upper substrate and the lower substrate. The upper substrate includes an upper polarizer (143) and a color filter layer (127), the upper polarizer being an extraordinary type polarizer. The lower substrate includes a reflective film (119). A multiplicity of pixel electrodes (113) and common electrodes (111) are positioned at the lower substrate, for applying a voltage to the liquid crystal layer. The display device has a wide viewing angle, can work at high temperatures, and is relatively thin and compact. Further, the color filter layer is positioned above the upper polarizer. Optical beams reach the color filter layer after passing back through the liquid crystal layer and the upper polarizer. This reduces or eliminates color filter de-polarizing, and yields a high contrast ratio over wide viewing angles.Type: GrantFiled: February 25, 2005Date of Patent: November 4, 2008Assignee: Innolux Display Corp.Inventors: Chiu-Lien Yang, Chueh-Ju Chen, Jia-Pang Pang

Patent number: 7443476Abstract: A continuous domain vertical alignment liquid crystal display (2) has a first substrate (21), a second substrate (22), and liquid crystal molecules (26) interposed between the substrates. A plurality of curved first protrusions (211) and a plurality of curved second protrusions (221) are disposed at insides of the substrates respectively. When an electric field is applied between the substrates, the liquid crystal molecules tend to be oriented parallel to the substrates. In addition, the curved protrusions affect the orientations of the liquid crystal molecules, such that the liquid crystal molecules are directed to incline in various directions in smooth continuums. The visual effect of the continuous domain vertical alignment liquid crystal display is the sum of multiple smooth continuous domains. Thus the continuous domain vertical alignment liquid crystal display provides a more even display performance at various different viewing angles.Type: GrantFiled: October 8, 2004Date of Patent: October 28, 2008Assignee: Innolux Display Corp.Inventors: Chueh-Ju Chen, Jia-Pang Pang, Chiu-Lien Yang
