    Abstract: A bone member fastener for closing a craniotomy includes a cap and a base interconnected by a narrow cylindrical collar. The cap has an externally threaded stud that screws into an internally threaded bore of the collar, thereby allowing the cap and base to be brought into clamping engagement against the internal and external faces of a bone plate and surrounding bone. In a particularly disclosed embodiment, the base of the fastener is placed below a craniotomy hole with the collar projecting into the hole, and the stud of the cap is screwed into the bore of the base from above the hole to clamp a bone flap against the surrounding cranium. This device provides a method of quickly and securely replacing a bone cover into a craniotomy. The distance between the cap and base can be selected by how far the threaded stud of the cap is advanced into the internally threaded collar. The fastener is therefore adaptable for use in several regions of the skull having various thicknesses.

    Abstract: A tool (a method, and a microarray apparatus) to enable evaluation of drug-drug interactions, by providing large numbers of pharmaceutical compounds on solid substrates in numerous replicate sets suitable for long-term storage. Ordinarily, the various compounds are present in extremely high densities. The libraries of pharmaceutical compounds, when used as a bioreaction assay chip, can be combined with a detection system that includes cells, cellular fractions, enzymes, organic molecules, and fluorescence or chromogenic reporter molecules along with a test drug agent. This method allows the detection of biochemical or biological interaction of the test drug agent with known pharmaceutical compounds in a defined biochemical or biological context of the assay.

The LIGA-fabricated movable member and the cavity cooperate to (a) define a sufficiently small clearance therebetween to achieve effective pumping action while (b) presenting a sufficiently low-friction fit to enable remote actuation. Such a pump can take the form of a piston pump, a vane pump, a centrifugal pump, a gear pump, etc. Other fluidic devices including flow sensors, piston valves, hydraulic motors, nozzles, and connectors can be fabricated using similar principles.

    Abstract: A myringotomy tube is disclosed for transtympanic placement in an ear to ventilate the middle ear and relieve infection. The tube includes body with a bore that is angled to provide a view of portions of the middle ear that are not immediately in line with a longitudinal axis of the body. An extension member is attached to the body, and may be grasped by forceps to rotate the tube, and direct the line of view through the bore to different portions of the ear. Rotation of the body and its angled bore permits a panoramic view of the inner ear. The extension may also be grasped by forceps to extract the tube from the ear. Longer extensions, that protrude out of the external opening of the auditory canal, may be used for temporary placement and manual digital removal without requiring forceps.

    Abstract: A molecularly imprinted substrate and sensors employing the imprinted substrate for detecting the presence or absence of analytes are described. One embodiment of the invention comprises first forming a solution comprising a solvent and (a) a polymeric material capable of undergoing an addition reaction with a nitrene, (b) a crosslinking agent (c) a functionalizing monomer and (d) an imprinting molecule. A silicon wafer is spincoated with the solution. The solvent is evaporated to form a film on the silicon wafer. The film is exposed to an energy source to crosslink the substrate, and the imprinting molecule is then extracted from the film. The invention can be used to detect an analyte by forming films which are then exposed to a reaction energy to form a crosslinked substrate. The imprinting molecules are extracted from the crosslinked substrate. The film is exposed to one or more of the imprinting molecules for a period of time sufficient to couple the imprinting molecules to the film.

    Abstract: A pump assembly includes a pump head that is coupled to a permanent magnet rotor. The rotor is enclosed in a cavity defined by a fluid-tight cup that has an open first end and a closed second end. This cavity is in fluid connection with the pump head through its open first end. Outside the cup enclosure are disposed a plurality of electrical stator windings. A housing encloses all of the foregoing elements, and may also enclose a circuit board that includes circuitry for driving the stator windings. The pump assembly thereby provided is compact, efficient, and reliable.
