  • Patent number: 7904128
Abstract: Described are mobile communication devices with retractable lanyard attachment posts that can be hidden when not in use. Also disclosed are embodiments of lanyard attachment posts that may include push-push or other mechanisms that a user may engage to deploy or hide the attachment post. In this way, by being able to hide the lanyard attachment member, the sleek lines of modern mobile communication devices may be maintained. Several embodiments include a push-push mechanism, for example, an E-clip embodiment, a C-clip embodiment, a stacked internal mechanism embodiment, and a compliant arm mechanism embodiment. Also disclosed is an embodiment of a retractable lanyard attachment post that may be respectively retained or released by turning the attachment post. In this manner, with either a push-push embodiment or a turnable embodiment, the mechanism for concealment and deployment of the lanyard attachment post may better utilize the device volume.

  • Publication number: 20100328219
Abstract: An improved mobile electronic device 100 with a unique thin and cost-effective form and design can have a large display 170 and a large full qwerty keypad 138. The keypad can have a camera 156 and flash 154 with a light barrier 158. A clear moldprint keypad can be used with graphics 148 on the backside of the keypad. The keypad can be positioned over a series of switches 162 or domes. The keypad 138 can further be recessed below the rim 136 of the housing 134 of the base so that the keypad will not contact a table or desk and be inadvertently activated if the keypad is placed face down. The moldprint keypad can be used to minimize wear of the graphics 148 and can have a specific textured pattern over the flash which can act as a lens to maximize light.

  • Publication number: 20090054112
Abstract: A portable electronic device (200) including a housing having a movable housing portion in the form of a flip, rotating blade or slider portion. A controller is electrically coupled to a plurality of light shutter portions in the movable housing portion, wherein the controller independently configuring each light shutter portion between first and second light transmitting states based upon input from a sensor, an application or based upon the configuration of the housing. The shutter portions may obscure or reveal an underlying display or inputs.

  • Publication number: 20080107830
Abstract: A structure and related method of providing a morphing appearance of a surface of such a structure can be implemented in relation to a wireless communication device such as a cellular telephone. In at least one embodiment, the structure is implemented in a cellular telephone and includes a first layer and a second layer positioned behind the first layer. The first layer is configured to restrict a viewing of the second layer from a first location in front of the first layer when a view path between the first location and the structure forms an angle relative to an axis extending from the structure that exceeds an angular threshold, whereby first and second images that differ from one another are respectively provided by the structure and visible at the first location depending upon whether the view path exceeds or does not exceed the angular threshold, respectively.
