Abstract: A mobile device executes a background process under an on demand model that queries a remote service exposed by a mobile broadband network to receive status updates as to the capabilities of devices, such as the ability to stream video, that are associated with contacts that are stored on the mobile device. When a mobile device user invokes an action like using a dialer application that causes a contact to be displayed on the device's user interface (UI) such as in a contact card or contact list format, the background process immediately retrieves status for that contact card or list. While waiting for the status retrieval to complete, the background process will trigger the display of a temporary UI on the mobile device which can show either unknown capabilities status or show the most recently retrieved status that is read out of a cache.

Abstract: A version control system such as may be used in an information management system for a source code development project. Multiple versions of artifacts are stored in the version control system. Some versions are stored in uncompressed form while others are stored in compressed form. The artifacts selected to be stored in compressed form are selected to facilitate rapid retrieval of files. The compression process is such that the compression may be performed as a background operation.

Abstract: An Envelope provides the integration of the functionality of an electronic mail (email) application program and the functionality of a document editor. Users can more easily generate and edit sophisticated documents for email transmission by invoking an Envelope that provides the user with the functions of an email client. A user that is editing a document in a document editor, such as a word processor or spreadsheet application can invoke the Envelope within the user interface of the document editor. The Envelope has its own user interface that is fully functional within the confines of the document editor's user interface to provide the user with the functionality of the email client application program. With the Envelope invoked, the user is enabled to execute many of the email client's functions while still editing the document within the document editor's user interface.
