Publication number: 20040225072Abstract: A method of controlled curing by a metathesis reaction upon mixing its components, the method including the step of mixing an olefin-containing substrate, a metathesis catalyst, and a reaction control agent. The metathesis catalyst is a ruthenium carbene complex catalyst, such as one containing an alkylidene ligand with basicity higher than that of tricyclohexylphosphine (PCy3) and a neutral electron donor ligand with a basicity lower than that of PCy3, whereby the catalyst initiates the metathesis reaction of the composition upon mixing with the substrate. The reaction control agent is effective to slow the progress of the metathesis reaction and prevent its completion in the absence of an elevated temperature. The control agent may be a hydrocarbon containing carbon-carbon double bonds and/or triple bonds, or maybe a modified hydrocarbon with one or more Group 14 or 15 atoms.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 6, 2003Publication date: November 11, 2004Applicant: Kerr CorporationInventor: Christos Angeletakis

Patent number: 6593395Abstract: The present invention provides a dental composite which has the high strength required for load-bearing restorations, yet maintains a glossy appearance, even after substantial wear. Through the use of particles having a mean particle size between about 0.05 &mgr;m and about 0.50 &mgr;m, the composite is useful in stress bearing restorations and in cosmetic restorations. The structural filler used is typically ground to a mean particle size of less than 0.5 &mgr;m and also includes a nanofiller having discrete particles of a mean particle size less than 100 nm to improve handling and mechanical characteristics. The preferred dental composites maintain their surface finish even after substantial use and also have the strength properties of hybrid composite resins.Type: GrantFiled: May 16, 2001Date of Patent: July 15, 2003Assignee: Kerr CorporationInventors: Christos Angeletakis, Minh-Dang Son Nguyen

Patent number: 6232367Abstract: There is provided a resin-containing dental composite including a dispersed phase, reinforcing, translucent filler having about 25-80% by volume of the filler particles in the particle size range from about 0.2 &mgr;m to about 0.6 &mgr;m whereby the composite has a self-opalescing quality. Preferably, the refractive indices of the resin and the translucent filler are the same or substantially similar, both advantageously being within the range of 1.45-1.60. Further, to prevent the opal effect from being masked, the dental restorative composite advantageously comprises less than 0.0021% by weight yellow hue pigments such that the composite formulation is relatively colorless.Type: GrantFiled: October 7, 1999Date of Patent: May 15, 2001Assignee: Kerr CorporationInventors: Alvin I.
