    Abstract: Methods and apparatus for providing nanoparticles having reduced symmetry are disclosed. One embodiment of a preferred method for producing such nanoparticles includes functionalization of a nanoparticle core, partial chemical passivation or masking of the nanoparticle surface, and nucleation and deposition of colloidal particles to selectively coat a specific section of the nanostructure surface with a conducting material.
