    Abstract: Apparatus and methods of using lasers are provided for spalling and drilling holes into rocks. A rock removal process is provided that utilizes a combination of laser-induced thermal stress and laser induced superheated steam explosions just below the surface of the laser/rock interaction to spall the rock into small fragments that can then be easily removed by a purging flow. Single laser beams of given irradiance spall rock and create holes having diameter and depth approximately equal to the beam spot size. A group of the single laser beams are steered in a controllable manner by an electro-optic laser beam switch to locations on the surface of the rock, creating multiple overlapping spalled holes thereby removing a layer of rock of a desired diameter. Drilling of a deep hole is achieved by spalling consecutive layers with an intermittent feed motion of the laser head perpendicular to the rock surface.

A rock removal process called laser spallation is provided that utilizes a combination of laser-induced thermal stress and laser induced superheated steam explosions just below the surface of the laser/rock interaction to spall or fracture the rock into small fragments that can then be easily removed from the rock formation. The use of high power laser beams of kilowatt level is provided to rapidly cut the steel casings and perforate into the formation. Techniques of the invention increase permeability and reduce hole tapering while perforating a deep hole in reservoir rock formations.

    Abstract: Apparatus in which a food product is cooked by being impaled on a plurality of heated grills that extend substantially therethrough. In this simplified apparatus, an operator rotates a first handle, which causes the elements of a separator to drop under gravity to a position among the grills and which further causes a press to descend to impale the food product onto the grills. The operator pulls and releases a second handle, which causes a container of heated cooking medium to raise and cook the food product, a cooking timer to start, the container to be lowered at the end of a predetermined cooking time, and the separator element to raise from the grills, thereby separating the food product from the grills. All of the above operations may be accomplished without the use of a motor or similar power source.

This composite cooking appliance is substantially immersed in a liquid heating medium so that heat is transferred through the fins and projecting grills to the interior of the hamburger patty. In this way cooking is accomplished in a relatively short period of time, and the amount of fat and meat juices that are melted or boiled away is reduced. A system for placing the hamburger patty on the cooking grills transports the patty to the cooking grills, then allows the patty to be impaled onto the grills.

    Abstract: An improved apparatus for pressuring a hard frozen comestible, similar to hardened ice cream, while simultaneously subjecting it to mechanical action to reduce the crystal and cell structure of the material to transform it into a soft, smooth and creamy texture only slightly less cold than its starting temperature. The apparatus includes a hopper for receiving the hard frozen comestible to be treated, an auger positioned above the hopper and automatically actuated by movement of the hopper toward the auger to produce conditioning of the comestible by the auger as the hopper and auger move toward one another into an adjacent relationship. The hopper is supported on a saddle member, and vertical guide members are employed for supporting and guiding the saddle member during vertical movement thereof provided by linkage assembly.

A device with a handle is provided for releasably engaging the cooking appliance so that the appliance can be conveniently moved even if hot. The device is provided with an ejection system for discharging the hamburger patty from the appliance.
