  • Patent number: 5608648
Abstract: Computer generated refined profiles for a pair of cooperating screw motors includes an initial profile for a female rotor and for a male rotor. The initial profiles are refined using an iterative procedure, and the female profile includes a groove having a leading flank comprising a generally circular arc connected to points which are developed by the iterative procedure to produce minimum clearances between these points and critical male points, such as the male tip and male root. The initial male profile is refined using the iterative procedure, and includes a surface generated to minimize the clearance with meshing female surfaces. The refined profiles, and a helix angle are used to define rotors having surfaces with pitch diameters located near a male root, thereby eliminating the "blow hole" leak and minimizing leak at the points where the female tip meshes near the male root.

  • Patent number: 5102379
Abstract: A planetary gear system includes a plurality of planet gears, each having a journal bearing and a pin, end supported in a planet carrier. Each pin has a small diameter central portion axially extending for end support. A larger diameter outer portion is integral with the central portion at an inboard merged zone, and has cantilever sections extending outboard from the merged zone. Each pin is sized such that bending of the merged zone in one direction is countered by bending of the cantilever sections in the other direction to achieve a substantially linear bearing surface under load.

  • Patent number: 4005515
Abstract: A disk having a closed channel construction and which is especially suited for supporting the rotating blades of a gas turbine engine is disclosed. In one embodiment, the disk supports the fan blades of a turbofan engine which extend radially therefrom. The disk structurally includes an upsteam web, a downstream web and a plurality of arcuate plugs disposed in end to end relationship between the webs to form a toroidal type structure having a substantially rectangular cross section. The disk is contoured to provide a level of torsional and bending stiffness which limits the most critical stage vibratory frequencies to values above the engine operating range while limiting the maximum value of the disk hoop stress during operation to a level below the durability limits of the disk material utilized. A method for making the disk is further disclosed.
