Patent number: 11800994Abstract: A patient support apparatus, such as a bed, cot, stretcher, or the like, includes an exit detection system and/or a monitoring system that monitors a set of conditions of the patient support apparatus. A user interface of the exit detection system includes a first navigation control for navigating to a control screen for the exit detection system and a second navigation control for navigating to a control screen for the monitoring system. Each navigation control also functions as an automatic arming control, thereby causing the respective exit detection system and monitoring system to be armed. In this manner, a single touch of a navigation control implements the dual function of automatically arming the corresponding system and taking the user to a control screen for the corresponding system. The automatically armed system is armed using one or more preset settings or one or more settings customized to a particular patient.Type: GrantFiled: June 25, 2020Date of Patent: October 31, 2023Assignee: Stryker CorporationInventors: Cory Patrick Herbst, Kurosh Nahavandi, David Buick, Placide Nibakuze

Publication number: 20220296444Abstract: A patient support apparatus, such as a bed, cot, recliner, operating table, stretcher, or the like, includes a control panel with multiple controls for controlling functions of the patient support apparatus. A control system disables at least a first control and changes an illumination state of a backlight when the patient support apparatus is in a particular state. In some embodiments, the particular state is the arming of an exit detection system and/or the deactivation of a brake on the patient support apparatus. The particular state may also or alternatively be tied to a particular mode of the patient support apparatus, such as a diagnostic mode, a maintenance mode, and/or a normal mode. The control system may also never illuminate a first icon on the patient support apparatus if it was initially configured in a particular manner, such as being intended for sale in a particular geographic market.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 7, 2022Publication date: September 22, 2022Inventors: Aaron Douglas Furman, Cory Patrick Herbst, Anish Paul

Patent number: 10987262Abstract: A medical chair includes a base, a seat, and a leg rest pivotally mounted relative to the seat and adapted to move between an extended position and a retracted position. The chair further includes a first actuator for tilting the seat with respect to the base, a second actuator for lifting the seat with respect to the base, and a leg rest actuator adapted to move the leg rest. The chair also includes a controller adapted to control the first and second actuators to move the seat between a first position and a second position such that the seat is both lifted and tilted at the same time as the seat moves from the first position to the second position, and wherein the controller is adapted to control the leg rest actuator such that the leg rest maintains a substantially constant orientation with respect to the floor.Type: GrantFiled: May 23, 2019Date of Patent: April 27, 2021Assignee: Stryker CorporationInventors: Joseph Adam Upchurch, Christopher S. Hough, Richard A. Derenne, Cory Patrick Herbst

Patent number: 10980689Abstract: A patient support apparatus includes a frame, a patient support surface, one or more force sensors that detect weight on the patient support surface, a recharger, and a controller. The recharger is adapted to recharge a personal electronic device of the patient's. The controller controls power supplied to the recharger based on outputs from the force sensors. Additionally or alternatively, a barrier is provided having a coil therein. The recharger includes a magnet for magnetically coupling to the barrier, and the recharger wirelessly receives power from the coil when the recharger is magnetically coupled to the barrier. Alternatively, the magnet holds a personal electronic device that receives power wirelessly from a coil inside the barrier. In still another variation, a pendant is included for controlling movement of the patient support apparatus and the pendant includes a recharger adapted to recharge a personal electronic device.Type: GrantFiled: July 13, 2018Date of Patent: April 20, 2021Assignee: Stryker CorporationInventors: Krishna Sandeep Bhimavarapu, Kurosh Nahavandi, Anish Paul, Cory Patrick Herbst, Jonathan Mark Greenbank, Christopher Matthew Reget

Patent number: 9713559Abstract: A medical chair includes a seat supported by a base and actuators adapted to both tilt and lift the seat with respect to the base. A controller controls the actuators to both lift and tilt the seat as the seat moves from the sitting position to the standing position. The movement from the sitting position to the standing position assists in the egress of an occupant from the chair, while the movement from the standing position to the sitting position assists in the ingress of an occupant to the chair. A backrest on the chair remains substantially vertically oriented during movement between the sitting and standing position so as to provide more comfort to the occupant during the sit-to-stand or stand-to-sit movement. The backrest also moves in a manner that generally keeps the occupant's torso vertically aligned with his or her hips during this movement.Type: GrantFiled: March 14, 2014Date of Patent: July 25, 2017Assignee: Stryker CorporationInventors: Christopher S.
