Patent number: 11984967Abstract: Satellite provisioning of cell service for an in-vehicle telematics control unit (“TCU”) is presented. Thus, a truly carrier independent TCU is facilitated. A TCU may be provided with a cellular modem and two or more SIM cards, each associated with a cellular carrier that has approved the modem and their SIM card. The TCU may also be provided with connectivity to a satellite, such as, for example, via an SDARS antenna and processing module, that can receive and process SDARS audio and data signals. When a user desires to change from one of the cellular carriers to another, provisioning data for the new carrier's SIM, now already in the telematics system, may be (i) sent over the satellite, (ii) received at the satellite antenna, and (iii) passed to a telematics processor. The telematics processor, in turn, may (iv) deliver the provisioning data to the cell modem, which may then (v) program the appropriate SIM with the provisioning data, thus allowing cellular communications on the new carrier's network.Type: GrantFiled: April 15, 2019Date of Patent: May 14, 2024Assignee: Sirius XM Radio Inc.Inventors: Paul Marko, Craig Wadin

Patent number: 11609679Abstract: Systems and methods are presented to facilitate caching of programming from broadcast and/or content streaming services to a user device for local playback. In addition, metadata can be provided to guide the user in selecting, caching, or playing the cachable content. In some exemplary embodiments, a receiver or other user device can automatically select the programming to be cached based on a user's historical topic interest and listening history. In some exemplary embodiments, the metadata can also include DRM information that can limit the ability of a user to playback the content, so as to comply, if necessary, with operative legal requirements related to usage of the content.Type: GrantFiled: November 6, 2019Date of Patent: March 21, 2023Assignee: Sirius XM Radio Inc.Inventors: Stuart A. Cox, Paul Marko, Craig Wadin

Patent number: 11195195Abstract: Various applications, systems and methods for using, and enhancing V2V communications for various purposes are described. These systems and methods leverage various aspects of satellite radio broadcasts in combination with V2V communications. In some embodiments, V2V-enabled vehicles can receive advertisements or offers from RSEs, or even other V2V enabled vehicles, in a defined Target Region, which may then be played to a user in-vehicle once a given Trigger Region has been entered. By logging all advertisements or offers played to a user and sending the log to an RSE, for example, and from there to a content provider (e.g., an SDARS service operator), verified delivery of advertisements is achieved, which allows the content provider to obtain significant revenues from advertisers.Type: GrantFiled: July 16, 2019Date of Patent: December 7, 2021Assignee: Sirius XM Radio Inc.Inventors: Stelios Patsiokas, Paul Marko, Craig Wadin, Joan DeLuca, Jeffrey David Hayes, Stuart Cox, Richard Andrew Michalski, Mark Rindsberg, George David Mantel, Joseph Michael Smallcomb, Anh Xuan Nguyen

Patent number: 11102619Abstract: Various multiple methods of data transport, and combinations thereof, may be used to initialize or update conditional access information on various devices. In an integrated device having both a broadcast receiver, such as an SDARS receiver, and a two-way communications transceiver, such as an LTE, 3G, 4G or 5G modem, or the like, conditional access information for the broadcast receiver may be sent to the transceiver, and then passed to the broadcast receiver, or vice versa. Additionally, for example, the broadcast receiver may be sent, over the broadcast communications channel, a “wake-up” message for the two-way transceiver, which message may then be passed to the two-way transceiver, so as to make it ready to receive conditional access information over the two-way communications channel, or vice versa.Type: GrantFiled: March 19, 2019Date of Patent: August 24, 2021Assignee: Sirius XM Radio Inc.Inventors: Richard Andrew Michalski, Mark Rindsberg, Ashok Vadekar, Paul Marko, Craig Wadin

Patent number: 9912423Abstract: A system for and method of implementing mobile commerce in a satellite radio broadcasting system. A unique program identifier is associated with each program segment of a broadcast. When a listener hears a program segment of interest, the listener causes the associated program identifier to be captured and thereafter to be transferred to a central location or hub. The transferring operation can be accomplished manually, via a media link or via a wireless network. Upon receipt of the program identifier at the central hub, the program identifier is used to determine information about the listener, obtain additional information regarding the program segment associated with the program identifier for the listener and/or initiate an e-commerce transaction involving the listener and/or other parties including merchandisers and advertisers.Type: GrantFiled: July 3, 2008Date of Patent: March 6, 2018Assignee: Sirius XM Radio Inc.Inventors: Patricia Kesling, Richard Michalski, Paul Marko, Craig Wadin, Stelios Patsiokas

Patent number: 9600573Abstract: Systems and methods are presented for a broadcast or streamed content receiver to receive a plurality of program channels with defined banks of subset channels, to display the banks on the radio receiver, and to receive dynamic updates of both channels within the banks and the content of each such channel. In exemplary embodiments of the present invention, the channels in a given bank can be determined by commonality as to defined categories, user interest, user preferences, and/or content provider, or seasonal or other relevance. In exemplary embodiments of the present invention, channels in one or more defined banks can be buffered to facilitate smart user scanning within such defined banks, or one or more banks can be used to generate a bank specific “TuneMix™” channel.Type: GrantFiled: January 14, 2014Date of Patent: March 21, 2017Assignee: Sirius XM Radio Inc.Inventors: Paul Marko, Stuart A.
