Abstract: A tailgate which can be moved to any of three positions on the back end of a vehicle. In addition to the normal open and closed positions, the tailgate has an elevated stabilizing position in which it is elevated above the vehicle bed in a horizontal orientation to reduce air drag and increase fuel economy. Each end of the tailgate has spring loaded upper and lower pins which can be retracted by operating handles on the tailgate. The lower pins are received in hinge openings in the vehicle sides to provide a hinge axis about which the tailgate can be opened and closed. Slots in the vehicle sides receive the upper pins to latch the tailgate closed. Both sets of pins fit in the slots when the tailgate is moved to the elevated position.
