The systems and methods include providing a physical communication connection from a card reader to a mobile device. With the mobile device, determining whether successful physical connection to the card reader has been established and determining whether a wireless connection has been established with the card reader. If a wireless communication connection has not been established with the card reader, establishing a wireless communication connection with the card reader and continuously monitoring whether the physical communication connection and the wireless communication connection with the card reader continues and communicating information between the card reader and the mobile device using both the connections as long as either continues.
