  • Patent number: 8277828
Abstract: A delivery system that includes a bone growth promoting material encapsulated within a water absorptive gelatinizable covering is used to promote bone growth in order to repair a bone defect and/or strengthen a weakened bone region. The delivery system may be shaped and sized in order to fit within a bleeding wound (e.g. one that is formed in the gingiva when a tooth is extracted). The covering may be formed of a gelatinizable gauze that forms a gel-like material when moistened with water. The delivery system is contained within a moisture resistant package prior to use. Alternatively, the delivery system comprises a bone growth promoting material and thickening agent contained within a syringe that, upon adding water, form a viscous gel or stiff putty. A polymerizable resin may be placed over the bone growth composition after placement on a bone to form a protective barrier layer.

  • Patent number: 8215960
Abstract: Water and aqueous sodium hypochlorite indicating endodontic monitoring devices include a cone-shaped water absorptive material and color changing system applied thereto that selectively changes to different colors when exposed to either water or aqueous sodium hypochlorite within a root canal chamber. The devices include a pH changing material, pH indicator, and pH insensitive dye. The dye imparts an initial color when the device is dry. The pH changing material and pH indicator react with water to yield a second color. In the presence of aqueous sodium hypochlorite, the device changes to a third color different from the initial color and second color as a result of bleaching the dye and/or pH indicator. Color changing devices are manufactured by applying an aqueous solution that includes a pH changing material and dye to a water absorptive cone, drying the cone, applying an anhydrous pH indicator solution, and then drying the cone again.

  • Patent number: 8202091
Abstract: Non-customized dental treatment trays used to provide a desired treatment are formed from elastomeric silicone or silicone-like material. They may be injection molded from a two-part liquid silicone composition or a silicone-like TPE material (e.g., preferably SEBS and/or VERSAflex thermoplastic elastomer). The dental treatment trays possess high adaptability, flexibility, softness, and elastic elongation while also exhibiting resiliency in order to readily conform to the ridges, depressions and contours of a person's teeth during use. The trays possess a greater ability to adhere to a person's teeth compared to non-elastomeric thermoplastic materials. Due to their high adaptability and conformability, the non-customized dental trays behave like a semi-custom dental tray when placed over conformed to a person's teeth, particularly when used in combination with a sticky, viscous treatment composition.

  • Publication number: 20120064481
Abstract: A syringe delivery system for dispensing a highly viscous material through a syringe delivery opening includes a syringe barrel having a delivery opening, a plunger stem including a threaded shaft that threadably engages a proximal end of the syringe barrel for selectively dispensing a viscous material through the delivery opening, and a sheath. The sheath is rigidly attached with the plunger stem so that the plunger stem and sheath rotate together in unison relative to the syringe barrel. The sheath and syringe barrel may enclose the plunger stem. In order to dispense a viscous material, the syringe barrel is rotated relative to the sheath, causing the syringe barrel to be progressively received within the sheath and simultaneously forcing the plunger stem further into the syringe barrel so as to dispense a viscous material from the delivery opening.

  • Publication number: 20120021396
Abstract: System and method for teaching a dental practitioner an appropriate pressure to apply during a dental procedure. The system includes a dental tool for use in a dental procedure and a substrate including a coating of a removable scratch-off material. The scratch-off material is adhered to the substrate so as to have an adherence strength that is specifically configured so that the scratch-off material coating is removable from the substrate by manipulating the dental tool against the scratch-off material coating upon application of a minimum threshold pressure that is substantially equal to that to be applied during a selected actual dental procedure. In this manner, an inexperienced practitioner is able to learn the appropriate magnitude of pressure to be applied during a procedure (e.g., application and burnishing of a hemostatic composition into bleeding soft tissue) in a non-threatening environment without having to actually work on a live, bleeding patient.

  • Patent number: 7922487
Abstract: A degradation resistant gingival retraction cord including silk is formed from two or more strands that are braided, twisted or woven. The degradation resistant retraction cord comprises at least about 50% silk, 80% silk, 90% silk, 95% silk, or essentially all silk. They are able to maintain at least about 70%, 80% or 90% of this tensile strength for a time period of at least about 7 days, 30 days, 60 days, or 90 days. The silk retraction cords have the look, feel and desirable utility of a thin, flexible, and resilient natural fiber cord, while also resisting degradation when pre-impregnated with a corrosive agent. Such cords combine the degradation resistance of a man-made fiber, while also having greater liquid absorbance, lightness, flexibility and resilience like a natural fiber cord.

  • Patent number: 7901208
Abstract: An absorbent and degradation resistant knitted gingival retraction cord comprising silk is formed from one or more strands by interlocking a plurality of loops. As a whole, the knitted retraction cord contains at least about 50% silk which, when manufactured so as to have a knitted structure, exhibits resistance to degradation and has the ability to absorb liquid (e.g., an active agent solution). An active agent is impregnated within the one or more strands and/or the plurality of interlocking loops of the knitted retraction cord such that the cord advantageously retains the active agent and resists degradation by the active agent.

  • Patent number: 7883335
Abstract: Gingival retraction cords are constructed from two or more strands that are interlocked to form a knitted, braided, woven, or twisted retraction cord. At least one strand is made from an absorbent material and another strand is made from a degradation-resistant material, such as nylon, polyester, fiberglass, or metal. The absorbent strands are impregnated with an active agent. The degradation-resistant strands resist degradation by the active agent. Alternatively, one or more strands are used to make the knit, weave, or braid and each strand is made from two or more different fibers. For example, one or more absorbent fibers and one or more synthetic fibers can be twisted to make a blended strand. The blended strands can be used to knit, braid, or weave a retraction cord. Because the degradation-resistant strands are part of the strand pattern, the retraction cords can be made sturdier without adversely affecting the cord's inherent deformation properties.

  • Patent number: 7780449
Abstract: A root canal is filled and/or sealed using a hydrophilic sealing composition, optionally in combination with other filling materials. The sealing composition may include one or more resins that promote adhesion to hydrophilic dental tissues. The composition may be introduced into the root canal using a narrow cannula coupled to a high pressure hydraulic delivery device. In the case where a chemical cure composition is used to seal the root canal, a chemical initiator can be used to cause the mixed composition to harden over time. Hardening of at least a portion of the composition can be accelerated by including a photoinitiator and irratiating the mixed composition with radiant energy (e.g., from a dental curing lamp).
