  • Patent number: 8050807
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for vertical motion detection of objects, such as aircraft. In one embodiment, a method comprises receiving altitude data for an object, determining a residual of a lag function, wherein the lag function comprises a moving average of the altitude data for the object, and wherein the residual corresponds to a difference between a value for the lag function and the object altitude data at a given time such that the residual grows in magnitude over time in response to the object transitioning from level flight to vertical motion, detecting vertical motion of the object by comparing a sum of data derived from the residuals against a threshold value, and outputting a vertical motion indicator after detecting the vertical motion of the object.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: May 22, 2008
Date of Patent: November 1, 2011
    Assignee: Raytheon Company
    Inventor: Dan Varon

  • Patent number: 6604028
Abstract: A process and apparatus are disclosed for estimating changes in the vertical mode of flight of an aircraft. The process and apparatus utilize a vertical motion detection method (VMD) and a modified altitude post processor logic to reduce the time delay for determination of vertical mode of flight changes.

  • Patent number: 6420993
Abstract: An apparatus and techniques for predicting conflicts between maneuvering aircraft which does not provide an excessive number of false alarms. The techniques utilize information to limit the time interval during which conflict predictions are made such that the predictions are made when they are most likely to be true.

  • Patent number: 6081764
Abstract: An apparatus and techniques for correlating crossing targets in an air traffic control system is described. The technique utilizes a target/track correlation made on the basis of three conditions: (1) separation distance between a target pair; (2) target polarity and (3) a value of a threshold separation value indicator.
