    Abstract: A method of casing multilateral wells and associated apparatus provide increased diameter in wellbores drilled below a casing splitter. In a described embodiment, a casing splitter is positioned in a subsea wellbore with a minimum restriction of 18.565″, with the casing splitter attached at a lower end of a 13⅜″ casing string. Two 8½″ bores extend through a lower end of the casing splitter, whereby only one standard casing size is skipped due to the wellbore junction formed by the casing splitter.

  • Milling guide having orientation and depth determination capabilities

    Abstract: A milling guide assembly includes features permitting a milling guide to be accurately positioned within a subterranean well. In a described embodiment, a milling guide has a logging tool attached thereto and a wireline extending through the milling guide. When the milling guide has been positioned and anchored within the well, the wireline is detached from a weak point disposed between the milling guide and the logging tool. The wireline is then withdrawn from the milling guide.

    Abstract: A lateral wellbore junction is formed by methods and apparatus described herein. In one described embodiment, an apparatus includes a section of casing and a sleeve axially reciprocably disposed relative to an opening formed through a sidewall of the casing. In one described method, the casing section is positioned within a parent wellbore, the sleeve is shifted to provide access through the opening, and a lateral wellbore is drilled by passing cutting tools through the opening.

In one embodiment described herein, a lateral wellbore junction is sealed utilizing an apparatus assembled within the well. The apparatus may include multiple housings which are engaged with each other to form a sealed assembly with flow passages extending into the lateral wellbore, and upper and lower portions of a parent wellbore. Associated sealing devices and flexible couplings are also provided.
