  • Patent number: 7647932
Abstract: A smoking article, such as a cigarette, includes a lighting end and a mouth end. The lighting end is a longitudinally extending segment comprising smokable material that is intended to be lit and burned, and the resulting smoke generated by the burning of that smokable material is intended to be drawn into the mouth of the smoker through the mouth end of smoking article. A mouth end piece is located at the mouth end of the smoking article, and the mouth end piece allows the smoking article to be placed in the mouth of the smoker to be drawn upon. The smoking article further incorporates an aerosol-generation system that is located between the lighting end segment and the mouth end piece. The aerosol-generation system includes (i) a heat generation segment located adjacent to the lighting end segment, and (ii) an aerosol-generation region located between the heat generation segment and the mouth end piece. The aerosol-generation region incorporates an aerosol-forming material (e.g., glycerin and flavors).

  • Patent number: 4542754
Abstract: A smoking article, such as a cigarette, includes generally cylindrically shaped, hollow tubular section located in coaxial abutment to one end of the tobacco column of the cigarette and a generally cylindrically shaped filter rod located in coaxial abutment with the tubular section. The wall of the tubular section is fabricated of an impermeable material. A plurality of grooves are formed in the periphery of the tubular section extending generally longitudinally thereof and being open to at least one end of the tubular section. Air permeable tipping material circumferentially surrounds the tubular section and the filter rod, and overlaps a portion of the tobacco column adjacent to the tubular section to fasten the tubular section and filter rod to the tobacco column.

  • Patent number: 4515170
Abstract: A ventilated mouthpiece adapted to be attached to a smoking article, such as a cigarette, includes a generally cylindrical core member of smoke and air impermeable material having a smoke inlet end and a mouth end. The smoke inlet end is to be placed in juxtaposition to one end of the tobacco column of the cigarette. The core member is formed with a plurality of smoke flow capillaries therethrough for delivering unfiltered smoke from the tobacco column to the mouth end of the core member, and a plurality of ventilation air flow channels which receive ambient ventilation air and delivers the ventilation air to the mouth end of the core member. The smoke outlets from each of the smoke flow capillaries at the mouth end of the core member are located in close proximity to and are radially situated inwardly of the mouth end of the core member from the air outlets from the air flow channels.

  • Patent number: 4386618
Abstract: A filter assembly for use with a cigarette includes a porous filter element with a longitudinally extending hollow tube extending from each end thereof, the filter element being circumscribed by a non-porous wrapping material. The filter assembly further includes a chamber axially aligned with the porous filter element and disposed between the filter element and a tobacco column. The chamber is provided with means to direct ventilating air into the hollow tube and means to direct smoke from the tobacco column into the filter element without mixing with the ventilating air. • Patent number: 4362171
Abstract: A filter for a cigarette includes a porous filter rod circumscribed by a smoke impervious wrapper wherein the filter rod with the non-porous wrapper therearound is provided with at least one groove therein extending a preselected distance longitudinally therealong. The groove is closed at one end and is provided with an opening substantially at the other end in flow communication with the filter rod. Tipping material circumscribes the wrapper and is provided with flow-through openings therein in flow communication with the groove wherein ventilating air is the only fluid flowing through the groove when the filter is used in combination with a cigarette during normal smoke draw.

  • Patent number: 4343319
Abstract: A filter for a cigarette includes a porous filter rod with at least one opening in each end thereof with at least one longitudinal groove embedded into the outer periphery of the rod intermediate the openings and in flow communication therewith. The filter rod is wrapped with non-porous plug wrap and overlaid with porous tipping material with the flow-through groove being between the plug wrap and the tipping material so that a portion of the smoke coming from a tobacco column mixes with ventilating air in the groove and the remaining portion of the tobacco smoke passes through the filter, with little or no contact with ventilating air until it reaches the smoker's mouth.
