  • Patent number: 8543063
Abstract: A method for communication includes receiving at a receiver from a group of two or more transmitters multiple Radio Frequency (RF) transmission beams that alternate in time and space and include at least first and second transmission beams. The method identifies that the first transmission beam causes interference to reception of the second transmission beam. Feedback is sent from the receiver to one or more of the transmitters, so as to cause the transmitters to attenuate the first transmission beam during transmission of the second transmission beam.

  • Patent number: 8526552
Abstract: A method includes receiving at a receiver a signal including reference symbols that is sent over a communication channel from a transmitter to the receiver. A response of the communication channel is estimated by applying one or more weighting values to the reference symbols. A noise correction factor is computed based on the weighting values. An estimate of a noise level in the received signal is computed based on the estimated response of the communication channel and the noise correction factor. The received signal is decoded based on the estimate of the noise level.

  • Patent number: 8457236
Abstract: A method for signal processing in a receiver includes receiving in the receiver a Multi-User Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MU-MIMO) signal. The MU-MIMO signal includes at least a first signal, which is precoded using a first precoding scheme and is addressed to the receiver, and a second signal, which is precoded using a second precoding scheme. An average error rate achievable in decoding the first signal in the presence of the second signal is computed. The average error rate is computed over a set of possible choices of the second precoding scheme. The first precoding scheme is selected from among a plurality of available precoding schemes so as to satisfy a criterion defined over the average error rate. The receiver sends feedback to a transmitter transmitting the first signal. The feedback depends on the selected first precoding scheme and causes the transmitter to control transmission of the first signal.

  • Patent number: 8412271
Abstract: A base station includes a reference signal generator, a boost selector, and a transmitter. The reference signal generator provides a dedicated reference signal to be transmitted over a plurality of antennas to a dedicated user device. The boost selector selects a dedicated boost level that is specific for the dedicated reference signal. The boost selector applies the dedicated boost level to the dedicated reference signal and not to a data signal to be transmitted to the dedicated user device. The boost selector generates a boosted dedicated reference signal. The transmitter transmits the boosted dedicated reference signal and the data signal to the dedicated user device after beamforming weights are applied to the boosted dedicated reference signal and to the data signal.

  • Patent number: 8391392
Abstract: A method includes configuring a transmitter and a receiver with first precoding matrices for mapping onto N transmit antenna ports of the transmitter R1?N data streams. Each first precoding matrix is derived from respective second and third precoding matrices, which are configured for mapping onto respective numbers of antenna ports that are less than N. A set of precoding matrices is defined for mapping r<R1 data streams onto the transmit antenna ports. Each matrix in the set includes a subset of columns of a given matrix selected from the first precoding matrices. A candidate matrix is included in the set when the candidate matrix cannot be expressed as a weighted permutation of the columns of another matrix in the set. The data streams are mapped onto the transmit antenna ports using a precoding scheme based on one of the first precoding matrices.

  • Patent number: 8385441
Abstract: A method for communication includes, in a transmitter having a first number of transmit antenna ports, setting an upper limit on a second number of spatial layers to be used by the transmitter to be less than the first number. An actual number of the spatial layers, which does not exceed the upper limit, is allocated for transmission to a given receiver. One or more streams of modulated symbols are mapped onto the allocated actual number of the spatial layers. The actual number of the spatial layers are transmitted from the transmitter to the given receiver. A precoding operation maps the spatial layers onto the transmit antenna ports. A first upper limit is set when the precoding operation depends on feedback from the given receiver. A second upper limit, which does not exceed the first upper limit, is set when the precoding operation is not dependent on the feedback.
