Abstract: Efforts to extend myocardial preservation for transplantation by perfusion with prior crystalloid based solutions have been limited by edema and compromised function. Hypothermic perfusion preservation with a polyethylene glycol (PEG) conjugated hemoglobin solution extends preservation times. The polyethylene glycol (PEG) conjugated hemoglobin solution comprises PEG-Hb, and at least one of the constituents selected from the group of human albumin, dextrose, heparin sodium, lidocaine HCl, MgSO4, KCl, CaCl2, Tromethamine (THAM) solution, NaCl, NaHCO3, and Na2HPO4/NaH2PO4. Comparison of cardiac function after continuous perfusion using a hypocalcemic normokalemic crystalloid perfusate is made with and without the addition of PEG-Hemoglobin (Hb).
