  • Patent number: 6551501
Abstract: Described herein is a combined process for improved hydrotreating of diesel fuels, in which the feed to be hydrotreated is pretreated with a selective adsorbent prior to the hydrotreating step to remove polar materials, especially nitrogen containing compounds (N-compounds). The selective adsorption process can employ either liquid or solid adsorbents. After contact of the adsorbent with the diesel fuel feed, the adsorbent containing undesired polar compounds is separated from the diesel fuel. The separated adsorbent is then subjected to a two step procedure for regeneration.

  • Patent number: 4133646
Abstract: An improved two-stage coal liquefaction process is provided, wherein solvent-boiling range phenolics, produced in the solubilization of the coal feed, are removed wholly or partially from recycle solvent at some point in the process prior to recycle to the first stage to control the level of phenolics in both stages of the process. The two-stage process involves a mild short contact time first stage operation, the removal of inorganic sulfur, ash and coal solids followed by a second stage operation, the severity of which is controlled as a function of the final product desired.

  • Patent number: 4098727
Abstract: This specification discloses a process for the production of oxygenated compounds, more specifically aldehydes and alcohols, by reacting an olefin with hydrogen and carbon monoxide in the presence of, as a catalyst, an insoluble polymer containing a functional group, which may be an amine, thiol, phosphine, or arsine group, having chemically bonded thereto a metal of Group VIII of the Periodic Table. The metal can be, for example, rhodium, cobalt, or ruthenium. The olefin can contain more than one carbon-to-carbon double bond, may be an open chain or a cyclic olefin, and may be substituted. Further, the olefin may be contained in a refinery stream such as a cracked gasoline. The reaction may be carried out in the presence of a polar solvent.

  • Patent number: 4046668
Abstract: Extraction of hydrocarbons from tar sands with a light naphtha/methanol solvent system results in rapid decrepitation of the tar-sand aggregate and separation of organic matter into three phases. Distribution of the extracted and non-extracted organic material is among the phases. The most desirable, non-polar organic materials are recovered from the light naphtha phase; more polar soluble constituents are recovered from the methanol phase; and less desirable asphaltenes separate as a precipitate.

  • Patent number: 3954883
Abstract: This specification discloses a method for carrying out catalytic polystep organic reactions at low temperature. The method is applicable to reactions wherein an initial reactant forms at least one intermediate product in one step of the reaction and an intermediate product forms a desired product in another step of the reaction. One of these steps is catalyzed by an acid group or a basic group and another step is catalyzed by a metal group or a metal compound group. The reaction is carried out by contacting the initial reactant with an ion exchange resin containing chemically bonded thereto as catalytic sites an acid group or a basic group and containing finely dispersed therein as catalytic sites at a distance from the other catalytic sites of the order of molecular dimensions a metal group or a metal compound group.
