  • Publication number: 20130259683
Abstract: An example ram air turbine biasing assembly includes a support member that holds a biasing member. The biasing member biases a component of a ram air turbine. The support member includes a step that limits movement of the component toward the biasing member.

  • Publication number: 20130256453
Abstract: An example ram air turbine stow abort assembly includes a release pin movable between an engaged position that prevents rotation of a drive shaft and a released position that allows rotation of the drive shaft. A release lever is rotatable about an axis in response to the release pin being in the engaged position or the released position. A pawl has a link to the release lever. The link causes the pawl to move toward the axis from a locking position to a clearance position. The pawl is positioned to engage a lock when in the locking position to prevent movement of the ram air turbine assembly to a stowed position when the turbine blades are misaligned.

  • Publication number: 20130256454
Abstract: An example ram air turbine drive shaft assembly includes a drive shaft that rotates about an axis to drive a hydraulic pump and a generator. The drive shaft has an interruption that redirects a fluid flowing from the hydraulic pump to the generator when the drive shaft is rotated.

  • Publication number: 20130257053
Abstract: An example ram air turbine generator assembly includes a generator housing that holds a generator in axial alignment with a hydraulic pump. The generator housing includes a wall having contacting portions that contact a stator of the generator and spaced portions that are radially spaced from the stator. The generator wall is designed to be strong enough to withstand HLSD and windmilling vibrations, while flexible enough to accommodate thermal expansion.

  • Patent number: 8375809
Abstract: A method for determining a load on a driven component of a rotating or stationary electromechanical system includes locating a rotationally flexible shaft portion in operable communication with a driving component having a drive rotor rotable about an axis and the driven component. The shaft portion is operably connected thereto. Angular positions of the drive rotor and the driven component are determined. A magnitude of a load on the driven component is calculated based on a difference in angular position of the drive rotor and the driven component and a known torsional rigidity of the shaft portion.

  • Publication number: 20120093653
Abstract: A turbine having a cam follower operable to control turbine blade pitch in association with a position thereof is provided and includes an axially movable plate, a rotational and axially movable flyweight and a system operably coupled to the plate and the flyweight whereby, at low RPMs, the system prevents flyweight rotation such that the plate and the flyweight position the cam follower at a first position, at medium RPMs, the system permits flyweight rotation such that the plate and the flyweight position the cam follower at a second position, and, at high RPMs, the system prevents further flyweight rotation and permits initial axial movement of the plate and the flyweight such that the plate and the flyweight position the cam follower at a third position.

  • Publication number: 20110236218
Abstract: An example a ram air turbine assembly (RAT) is mounted to an airframe and provides both electric power and hydraulic pressure. A turbine drives a drive shaft about an axis transverse to rotation of the turbine. The drive shaft in turn drives both a generator and a hydraulic pump at a common speed.

  • Publication number: 20110229342
Abstract: A disclosed ram air turbine assembly includes a movable support structure that is prevented from moving to a stowed position by a stow abort mechanism that prevents movement to the stowed position when the turbine is not in a desired orientation.

  • Publication number: 20110229309
Abstract: A ram air turbine (RAT) includes a movable turbine support structure that is prevented from moving to a stowed position by a stow abort mechanism when turbine blades are not locked in a desired position. The stow abort mechanism includes a pawl that is driven by a cam on a release lever. The release lever is movable in response to a position of a release pin that prevents rotation of a turbine drive shaft from a desired orientation that locks the turbine blades in a desired position required for stowage. Disengagement of the release pin causes the stow abort mechanism to maintain a position where the pawl blocks movement to the deployed position. Engagement of the release pin to prevent rotation results in movement of the pawl to a position that provides for movement to the stowed position.

  • Patent number: 7942079
Abstract: A turbine engine power generation system includes a gearbox that receives rotational drive from a low spool through an input gear, in one example. The gearbox includes first and second clutches that are coupled to an input shaft of an auxiliary component, such as a generator. First and second output gears are driven at different rotational speeds by the input gear and respectively associated with the first and second clutches. An actuator selectively engages at least one of the first and second clutches to select between first and second rotational speeds in response to a command from a controller.

  • Publication number: 20100158698
Abstract: A ram air turbine assembly includes a preferentially located mass that modifies the resonance frequency of the assembly so that vibration is reduced to desired levels. The example mass can be fixed in a specific location on the ram air turbine or can be deployable once the ram air turbine is moved to an operating position.
