  • Patent number: 9941435
Abstract: A photovoltaic module is disclosed. The photovoltaic module has a first side directed toward the sun during normal operation and a second, lower side. The photovoltaic module comprises a perimeter frame and a photovoltaic laminate at least partially enclosed by and supported by the perimeter frame.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: July 1, 2011
Date of Patent: April 10, 2018
    Assignee: SunPower Corporation
Inventors: Gabriela E. Bunea, Sung Dug Kim, David F. J. Kavulak
  • Patent number: 9685571
Abstract: A solar cell module includes solar cells that are encased in a protective package and a high electric susceptibility layer that is placed on the solar cells. The high electric susceptibility layer is polarized such that a sheet charge is developed at the interface of the high electric susceptibility layer and the solar cells. The protective package includes an encapsulant that encapsulates the solar cells. The encapsulant may be a multilayer encapsulant, with the high electric susceptibility layer being a layer of the encapsulant. The high electric susceptibility layer may also be a material that is separate from the encapsulant.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: August 14, 2013
Date of Patent: June 20, 2017
    Assignee: SunPower Corporation
Inventors: Yu-Chen Shen, Ernest Hasselbrink, Jr., David F. J. Kavulak
  • Publication number: 20170069777
Abstract: An adhesive may be applied to a surface of a reusable carrier. Metal foil may be attached to the adhesive to couple the metal foil to the surface of the reusable carrier. The metal foil may be patterned without damaging the reusable carrier. A semiconductor structure (e.g., a solar cell) may be attached to the patterned metal foil. The reusable carrier may then be removed. In some embodiments, the semiconductor structure may be encapsulated using an encapsulant, with the adhesive being compatible with the encapsulant.
    Type: Application
    Filed: November 18, 2016
    Publication date: March 9, 2017
    Applicant: SunPower Corporation
Inventors: Thomas PASS, Richard SEWELL, Taeseok KIM, Gabriel HARLEY, David F. J. KAVULAK, Xiuwen TU

  • Publication number: 20140034111
Abstract: A photovoltaic module has a first side directed toward the sun during normal operation and a second, lower side. The photovoltaic module comprises a perimeter frame and a photovoltaic laminate at least partially enclosed by and supported by the perimeter frame. The photovoltaic laminate comprises a transparent cover layer positioned toward the first side of the photovoltaic module, an upper encapsulant layer beneath and adhering to the cover layer, a plurality of photovoltaic solar cells beneath the upper encapsulant layer, the photovoltaic solar cells electrically interconnected, a lower encapsulant layer beneath the plurality of photovoltaic solar cells, the upper and lower encapsulant layers enclosing the plurality of photovoltaic solar cells, and a homogenous rear environmental protection layer, the rear environmental protection layer adhering to the lower encapsulant layer, the rear environmental protection layer exposed to the ambient environment on the second side of the photovoltaic module.
