  • Patent number: 5934729
Abstract: An energy-absorbing fastener assembly is used to mount an automotive trim panel in spaced relation to a structural member, such that an actuation load impingent on the panel causes the panel to deflect toward the structural member while the fastener assembly absorbs at least part of the kinetic energy. The fastener assembly can include a male fastener element movable into a socket to cause deflectable walls on the fastener element to frictionally engage the socket surface so as to absorb energy associated with trim panel deflection.
