Patent number: 7270948Abstract: Mass spectrometric techniques are provided for detecting the presence of parasites that accumulate unbound heme in red blood cells (including malaria parasites), based on the discovery that unbound heme can be detected and quantified using mass spectrometry. In one aspect of the invention, the method includes the steps of: obtaining a blood sample from the animal; preparing a test sample on a support from the blood sample, and inserting the support into a mass spectrometer for analysis. Next one obtains a mass spectrum of the test sample and determines whether the mass spectrum contains a mass/charge signature of unbound heme. If it is determined that the mass spectrum of the test sample shows the mass/charge signature of unbound heme, the animal is diagnosed as infected with malaria parasites.Type: GrantFiled: March 28, 2003Date of Patent: September 18, 2007Assignee: The Johns Hopkins UniversityInventors: Plamen A. Patent number: 6883020Abstract: A process and apparatus for storing, in non-volatile memory of a local computer system, a selected remote web page and all web pages in a preselected number of nodes below the selected web page. The stored web pages may be filtered to cause the local computer system to store only web pages that are not larger than a preselected size, or web pages that are stored on the same remote network device.Type: GrantFiled: June 26, 1997Date of Patent: April 19, 2005Assignee: Hewlett-Packard Development Company, L.P.Inventors: Edward James Taranto, William Joseph Gauvin, Ursula Smith, David J. Patent number: 6105028Abstract: A method and apparatus for enabling access of a document on a remote network device by a local computer includes an interceptor for intercepting a request (from a web browser on the local computer system) for accessing the document. The interceptor responsively ascertains whether the local computer is connected to a network and, if connected to the network, downloads the document into memory of the local computer system. If the local computer is not connected to the network, the method and apparatus locates the document in the local memory of the local computer. Once downloaded or located, whichever the case may be, the document may be utilized by the user, such as by displaying the document on a display device.Type: GrantFiled: June 26, 1997Date of Patent: August 15, 2000Assignee: Digital Equipment CorporationInventors: David J. Sullivan, William Joseph Gauvin, Edward James Taranto
