Patent number: 6489617Abstract: Disclosed is a is an improved flood source, and method of making the same, which emits an evenly distributed flow of energy from a gamma emitting radionuclide dispersed throughout the volume of the flood source. The flood source is formed by filling a bottom pan with a mix of epoxy resin with cobalt-57, preferably at 10 to 20 millicuries and then adding a hardener. The pan is secured to a flat, level surface to prevent the pan from warping and to act as a heat sink for removal of heat from the pan during the curing of the resin-hardener mixture.Type: GrantFiled: October 18, 1999Date of Patent: December 3, 2002Assignee: Battelle Memorial InstituteInventors: Darrell R. Fisher, David L. Alexander, Stanley Satz

Patent number: 4612799Abstract: A method and apparatus for measuring viscosity of an oil at low temperature and low shear stress. It employs a columnar container of the oil with vertically spaced temperature control devices to apply different cooling histories simultaneously. After the cooling histories have been applied, the viscosity of all the different histories is determined by measuring the instantaneous velocity of a probe moving through the column of oil under a constant force.Type: GrantFiled: October 25, 1985Date of Patent: September 23, 1986Assignee: Texaco Inc.Inventors: Frank H. Choi, Samuel W. Rein, David L. Alexander

Patent number: 4429465Abstract: An apparatus for measuring the angle of at least one side surface of an endless power transmission belt construction of the V-belt type and a method of making such apparatus are provided, the apparatus having a first part against which the belt construction is adapted to be disposed in a belt construction measuring position thereof and having a second part pivotally mounted to pivot on an axis thereof and being adapted to be pivotally disposed against the one side surface to indicate the angle thereof by the relation of its pivoted position relative to a reference when the belt construction is against the first part in the measuring position thereof. The apparatus has a moving unit operatively interconnected to the second part to tend to move the same toward the belt construction in a direction substantially transverse to the axis thereof when the belt construction is in the measuring position thereof.Type: GrantFiled: March 29, 1982Date of Patent: February 7, 1984Assignee: Dayco CorporationInventors: James D. Hill, Jr, David L. Alexander, Thomas W. Brooks

Patent number: 4273743Abstract: A chemical plant, wherein gaseous reactants are converted in an exothermic chemical reaction to a reaction product, is combined with a semi-closed Brayton-cycle power plant to utilize the heat of reaction to generate power. Specifically, in one embodiment, an ammonia synthesis plant, wherein gaseous nitrogen and hydrogen are catalytically converted to ammonia, is combined with a semi-closed Brayton-cycle power plant to utilize the heat of reaction of the ammonia synthesis reaction to generate power.Type: GrantFiled: December 10, 1979Date of Patent: June 16, 1981Assignee: Texaco Inc.Inventors: Everett M. Barber, James R. Muenger, David L. Alexander

Patent number: 4121912Abstract: Power is developed by an expansion turbine in which the working fluid is a gaseous mixture comprising all of the hot raw gas stream leaving an unpacked partial oxidation gas generator, after removing if present a portion of the entrained solids, in admixture with a temperature moderating stream. A molal increase is associated with the partial oxidation process. Power is obtained from this molal increase in addition to the power obtained from the elevated pressure and sensible heat in the hot raw partial oxidation product gas. The temperature moderating stream may comprise a recycle portion of the turbine exhaust gas stream after being cooled, cleaned, optionally water-gas shifted or purified, or both, and recompressed. Alternatively, the recycle gas stream may be mixed with water, steam, or both. In one embodiment the temperature moderating stream comprises liquid water or condensate produced in the process.Type: GrantFiled: May 2, 1977Date of Patent: October 24, 1978Assignee: Texaco Inc.Inventors: Everett M. Barber, James R. Muenger, David L. Alexander, Warren G. Schlinger
