Patent number: 6732358Abstract: A system for managing resources, which can take the form of (a) computer-compatible information, such as data files and programs, and (b) non-computer-compatible information, such as data contained on microfiche, and (c) physical objects. The resources are located at geographically diverse sites. The invention contains a descriptive profile for each resource, and allows any user to search all profiles, and to search the profiles according to “fields” (a database term), such as by location of the resources, or by category of the resources. The user can order delivery of a selected resource, and the system causes delivery of the resource to be executed, irrespective of the form (e.g., physical object) of the resource. If a resource takes the form of software, the invention provides a facility for detecting updates to the software, and automatically downloading the undated software to a user's computer.Type: GrantFiled: March 24, 1994Date of Patent: May 4, 2004Assignee: NCR CorporationInventor: David M. Patent number: 6662240Abstract: A system for automated configuration of computer peripherals. Peripherals are equipped with identification codes, which can be read by a computer, and which identify the type of peripheral. The computer stores a look-up table of configuration modes required for each peripheral type. When the computer polls a peripheral, and learns, from the identification code, that a peripheral type has changed, the computer orders a re-configuration of necessary equipment, to accommodate the change.Type: GrantFiled: May 8, 1996Date of Patent: December 9, 2003Assignee: NCR CorporationInventor: David M. Patent number: 6526512Abstract: A security system for computer repositories. Users of the repositories are assigned key codes. The repositories contain resources, such as programs and data, which are also assigned key codes. The key code of a resource contains fields, which contain information, in encoded form, which specify characteristics of users which are necessary to gain access to the resource, and conditions under which access is to be allowed. For example, a given key code may specify that only users having (i) a surname beginning with “W”, and (ii) a “classified” security clearance will be granted access and, further, (iii) that access will be granted only on odd-numbered Wednesdays. When a user seeks access to a resource, a security process inquires whether the user's key code indicates that the user meets the conditions specified by the resource's key code.Type: GrantFiled: May 20, 1996Date of Patent: February 25, 2003Assignee: NCR CorporationInventors: David M. Patent number: 6519600Abstract: The invention concerns a system for managing resources, which can take the form of (a) computer-compatible information, such as data files and programs, and (b) non-computer-compatible information, such as data contained on microfiche, and (c) physical objects. The resources are located at geographically diverse sites. The invention contains a descriptive profile for each resource, and allows any user to search all profiles, and to search the profiles according to “fields” (a database term), such as by location of the resources, or by category of the resources. The user can order delivery of a selected resource, and the system causes delivery of the resource to be executed, irrespective of the form (eg, physical object) of the resource. The invention allows a provider of a new resource to limit access to the resource, by identifying users who are authorized to obtain access to the resource. Non-authorized users cannot obtain access to the profiles of these resources.Type: GrantFiled: August 22, 2000Date of Patent: February 11, 2003Assignee: NCR CorporationInventor: David M. Siefert

Patent number: 6386883Abstract: The invention concerns computer-assisted education, in which a school curriculum is stored in computer repositories. A learning profile is maintained for every student, which indicates the student's capabilities, preferred learning style, and progress. Based on the profile, an Intelligent Administrator (IA) selects appropriate material for presentation to the student during each learning session. The IA then assesses whether the student has mastered the material. If not, the material is presented in a different way. If repeated different presentations fail to instill mastery, the IA establishes a video conference between the student and a professor.Type: GrantFiled: November 4, 1994Date of Patent: May 14, 2002Assignee: NCR CorporationInventor: David M. Patent number: 6047261Abstract: A system and method is provided for monitoring and enhancing computer assisted performance. The method includes providing a user interface for a business terminal, measuring the performance of the user interaction with the user interface, adjusting parameters of the user interface to try to increase the performance of the user interaction, tracking whether the performance has increased, and causing an escalation event to occur if the user performance is below a predetermined level. The system and method preferably includes creating a user profile of the parameters that obtain the best performance for each user. This user profile may be created during new employee orientation but is updated continually as the user uses the business terminal to complete actual business transactions.Type: GrantFiled: October 31, 1997Date of Patent: April 4, 2000Assignee: NCR CorporationInventor: David M. Patent number: 5778380Abstract: The invention allows computer programs to load files generated by other programs. The invention identifies the program which generated a file of interest, based on overhead data contained within the file, and translates the file into a format compatible with the user's program. The invention can also identify the language in which a text file was written, and translate the language into another language specified by the user. Each user has a profile, which specifies preferences of the user, such as preferred language, preferred output device, preferred screen colors, and so on. The invention causes files to be displayed in conformity with the user's profile.Type: GrantFiled: April 9, 1997Date of Patent: July 7, 1998Assignee: NCR CorporationInventor: David M. Siefert

Patent number: 5726688Abstract: A predictive, adaptive interface for a computer, wherein a user's interaction with the computer is monitored, and future interactions are predicted, based on previous interactions. The invention adapts the interface to the user's preferences, using the predictions. For example, if a particular user repeatedly selects one option from a given menu, the invention detects this repeated selection, and adapts to the user's selection by eliminating other options from the menu.Type: GrantFiled: September 29, 1995Date of Patent: March 10, 1998Assignee: NCR CorporationInventors: David M.
