  • Publication number: 20240175477
Abstract: A head unit system for controlling an object includes a head unit device that include shear thickening fluid (STF) and a chamber configured to contain the STF. The chamber further includes a set of gates between a front channel and a back channel. The set of gates includes a bypass opening set. The head unit device further includes a piston housed at least partially radially within the chamber. The set of gates is configured to control flow of the STF between the front channel and the back channel to control rotational movement of the object.

  • Patent number: 11971056
Abstract: A head unit device for controlling motion of an object includes a chamber filled with a shear thickening fluid (STF) and a piston. The piston is housed within the chamber and exerts pressure against the STF from a force applied to the piston from the object. The STF is configured to have a decreasing viscosity in response to a first range of shear rates and an increasing viscosity in response to a second range of shear rates. The piston includes at least one piston bypass between opposite sides of the piston that controls flow of the STF between the opposite sides of the piston to selectively react with a shear threshold effect of the first range of shear rates or the second range of shear rates.

  • Publication number: 20140279012
Abstract: For an advertisement opportunity near a travel region, advertisements may be selected that are targeted to individuals who are likely to view the advertisement. However, travel patterns among individuals sharing particular traits may exist that facilitate targeted advertising, but may be non-intuitive and therefore difficult to predict, and other techniques, such as population surveys, may be costly and inaccurate. Presented herein are techniques for automatically evaluating travel patterns by tracking the routes of particular individuals, and inferring demographics for such individuals based on the locations of their routes (e.g., an individual whose route frequently includes a residence may be presumed to share the population demographics of the residential neighborhood). Extrapolating such individual demographics may enable inference of shared demographics at particular advertisement opportunities (e.g.

  • Patent number: 8402979
Abstract: A hair wash and rinse brush provides for a substantially flat brush structure that comprises a handle portion and a paddle, or “brush,” portion. The brush portion incorporates a plurality of apertures. Some of the apertures have hollow bristles disposed within them. In this fashion, water can be dispersed directly onto the hair of the user or the user's pet and directly onto the user's scalp or onto the pet's skin during washing and rinsing. The brush may also alternatively include an enclosure at the back of the brush, the enclosure for attaching the brush to a water supply. The enclosure can also be configured to be removably attachable to the back of the brush.

  • Patent number: 8180474
Abstract: There is provided a method for designing a garment having a particular certification based on the visibility characteristics of the garment. The method takes into account various factors including manufacturing tolerances, occlusion by logos, etc. to calculate a certification level for the garment visibility. This certification level is calculated dynamically as the design features are amended.

  • Publication number: 20110223600
Abstract: A method and assay for predicting athletic performance potential of a subject, such as a thoroughbred race horse, comprising the steps of assaying a biological sample from a subject for the presence of a single nucleotide polymorphism in one or more genes associated with athletic performance. The athletic performance genes may be selected from one or more of MSTN, COX4I2, PDK4, CKM and COX4I1.

  • Publication number: 20060278073
Abstract: A fuel system for an energy conversion device includes a multiple of fuel plates, oxygen permeable membranes, porous substrate plates, and vacuum frame plates which define a wave pattern configuration. The wave configuration enhances deoxygenation by increasing the efficiency and integrality due to higher surface volume ration, increase of flow turbulence, and minimal sharp edges which may otherwise damage the oxygen permeable membranes compared to other configurations.

  • Patent number: 6230047
Abstract: An apparatus combines a plurality of incoming audio signals and outputs a combined audio signal. The incoming audio signals include a music signal, e.g., from a CD or cassette player, and a rhythm signal triggered by a user's heartbeat. The tempo of the rhythm will increase or decrease with the pulse rate of the user. In an alternative embodiment, the tempo may be set at a predetermined level to raise or lower the heartbeat of the user.

  • Patent number: 5679192
Abstract: Electric cables with sector-shaped conductors, for maximizing duct capacity, are made by a process in which the shaped metallic conductor is first preformed into a helical twisted form ("pre-spiralled"), next covered with insulation of EPR, polyethylene or other suitable insulation material to form a core, third subjected to ionizing radiation to crosslink the insulation, and fourth laid up with other like cores to form a cable. All the steps are well known yet the potential to apply radiation crosslinking to this type of cable--in which other crosslinking techniques are wholly impracticable--has not hitherto been appreciated.
